  • Boys Name Question - Finley / Finn

H and I are scouring boys names books at the moment as are stumped. We have girls names coming out of our ears but no boys names.

Amongst looking we've found Finn/Finley and Finlay come up in most books as separate names.

So my question is could you put Finley on a birth certificate but call him Finn, or is Finn not an abbrevation of Finley?

    Thanks! x

You can put Finley OR Finn on a birth certificate. If you prefer Finn to Finlay, then do that. It doesn't have to be an abbreviation!

    My friend's boy if Finn.

    Hello

I have a Finley (Finley Sean) on birth certifcate and we call him Finley, Finn, Fimbo, Mr Finbar, Squigg and Peanut so i'm sure you're fine with Finn.  Lots of our friends/family call him Finn all the time

As far as we could figure Finley/Finlay are the same but different spellings and Finn is the abbreviation used for both.

Obviously i'm biased but i think it's a gorgeous name whichever way x

I would say Finn could be a name in it's own right but I would use it as the abbreviation.

We've always said we would put the full name on the certificate so later in life the child can use it if he/she wanted (unless the full name is not nice), but if we prefer the abbreviation we'll just introduce him as the abbreviation IYSWIM?

So if we liked Finn we'd put Finley on the birth cert but introduce him to the world as Finn. But I wasn't sure if Finn was an abbreviation of Finley!

However we also like Archie but would have to put Archie on the birth cert too as I don't like Archibald!

    Boys names are so hard!

I should also have said Finley/Finlay are the same name when it boils down to it, and Finn is certainly an abbreviation, as well as a name in its own right.

You're right though, boys names are HARD! We only managed to agree on 2 boy's names, and one of those still caused alot of debate before and after the birth!Laugh

Mind you, we only have one girl's name that we both agree on*, so it'll be interesting to see what happens if we have more than one girl in the future!
*I have plenty of names, H just can't see sense when it comes to them.Laugh
Will you be finding out the sex Hep?
  • Re: Boys Name Question - Finley / Finn

Luckily girls names we seem to agree on and have a list of our favourite 3 already with one being the out and out top choice

Boys - Well we kind of like about 2 but don't love any of them!

Nope not finding out the sex Mazzy so have to be sure about both boy and girl names really, I just wish we loved a boys one as much as the girls one!

No idea what happened with my last post! Very odd!

We knew we were having a boy, but we still couldn't decide, so had a listWink of 3/4 names, which in reality was a choice of 2 names.
We decided once the baby was here and we'd had a bit of time with him, and he's now very definitely an O. I do think they grow into their names, and now I can't see him as anything else.Smile

Yes boys names are so hard - we could have picked about 10 goergeous girls names that we both loved. We knew we were having a boy and had over 20 weeks trying to agree on a name and still couldn't.  Even argued about it in labour (well after i had the epidural that is!). Then when he was born all of the names that were in the pipeline that we thought might have been a possiblity went out of the window and we decided he just was a Finley Smile (not even one of the names that we'd even thought about - no idea where it came from).

Yes you could put Finley on the birth certificate and call him Finn.

I think Finley/Finn is a lovely name - not that you asked. Laugh

  • Re: Boys Name Question - Finley / Finn

We have Finley and wanted him to have the option of Fin (I always pictured it with one n!) but don't use it ourselves, he is Finbo or FinBobaloola!! x

We had Theo on the birth certificate as I didnt want Theodore or Theobald.

This time (99% sure) we're having Eleni as official name and used sometimes but on a day to day basis I will also use the name Nell.

    Eleni Sofia 23.03.10

Pip, when you announce the birth will you tell people she's Eleni or Nell? Just curious as this is what is confusing H and I!
