  • first trip swimming and we end up in A&E :-(

Yesterday, H had the day off and we decided to take Ruby swimming for the first time. They gave us the disabled changing room so that we could all get changed together, which is what they do for families (I phoned to check beforehand). There was a large bench sort of thing already pulled down in there so we sat on there to get changed etc and went swimming which Ruby really liked. When we were getting changed again after we got Ruby dressed we strapped her in her car seat and put her on the bench. Then me and H got dressed and I went out to the loo and H was right next to her.

I came back in to Ruby screaming and screaming. The bench had collasped and her car seat had fallen forward basically throwing her head first onto the hard floor and landing upside down! H had already got her out of the seat and was cuddling her when I got back so I didn't see how it landed but that is how he said it fell. We took her to A&E and they did xrays on her head and said she is ok but to keep an eye on her and look out for signs etc. Overnight she seemed fine. Today she’s a little clingy and tearful but is generally happy playing.

I have no idea how she wasn't more badly injured. Her head was about 3ft above the ground and she basically head butted the hard floor and the car seat was on top of her. Imagine if we did the same from say 6ft. The bar wasn't in the carry position which probably would have stopped her head hitting the ground. She's been so brave :-(

H called someone in to see the bench etc whilst I was calming her down and once H had played around with it he said that the legs didn't lock properly into position, they could slowly edge out of position and there was no locking mechanism. There were no instructions saying this was a folding bench or how to put it down or up (it was already in position when we used it).

I’ve been beating myself up thinking we shouldn’t have put her car seat on the bench as I know really they shouldn’t be above ground but I’ve been thinking about it and she would have still hurt herself if she was sat on the bench with us in front of her or laid down being changed. Similarly if a disabled person had been using the bench it would have collapse and they would have hit the ground.

Oh bless her. What a shock for you all. How awful that the bench was faulty - as you say - anyone could have been injured.

    Thank goodness she is ok.

    Poor Ruby and poor you!

I would be kicking up a right fuss to make sure they did something about it to ensure that no-one else was hurt.  Was it written in the accident book?  If not I would ask them to and ask them to investigate how it happened.  Sadly accidents do happen and we have all done things that we have thought afterwards we wished we hadn't or had done it differently but the leisure center should do something to ensure it can't happen again.

Oh how scary for you all and poor Ruby.

Hope her head is ok and the next time you go swimming is totally uneventful!

That must have been terrifying for you Hug

Please don't blame yourself though - those benches are designed to be sat on, and a baby in a car seat weighs much less that an adult.  And it's their job to check that the equipment is safe.  Hope your next trip is better

Oh gosh, how terrifying for you all x  So glad to hear she is okay.

As for the bench - completely unacceptable, was all this documented while you were there?  If not, I would be writing everything down and getting it sent to the manager of the pool/leisure centre recorded delivery.  This needs dealing with before someone else is hurt.

Hope it hasn't put you off swimming.

Thank you everyone. She is doing ok. I just keep picturing her falling head first... :-(

Yes we got someone in to record it in the accident book. Someone from the pool phoned last night whilst I was bathing R and H reiterated what we had said to the attendant about no locking mechanisim and no instructions / warnings. I will being writing a letter in and will copy it to the council too.

Oh no, that must have been so scary. Hope she's okay now, and that the swimming pool improve guidelines/procedures so this doesn't happen again x

Glad she is okay. I agree with BG, that is terrible, especially given that the bench was obviously meant to be weightbearing given it was in a disabled cubicle.

oh how terrible for you hope you get somewhere with the council it need sorting out

also i dont want to alarm you but have you checked your car seat as an impact like that could have affected it, check under the cover at the polystryene and check there is no cracks/blisters/bubling any marks at all

personally i would get the council to buy you a new one but i am a very overly cautious person esp when it comes to car seats

    glad Ruby is ok though
