  • Balance bikes

I'd orginally wanted to get O one of these for his 3rd birthday, but that was on the assumption we'd moveand would have a garden and nicer outdoor areas/parks to go to. We haven't moved, and probably won't in the forseeable future, but I was thinking of getting him one anyway as in the summer we spend lots of time at the park, so he could at least use it there.

We don't have much of a budget so was looking for recommendations please. Are the wooden ones actually any better than a more conventional metal framed one? Thinking logically I'd have thought the wood ones were quite heavy, or is that a plus point (not for lugging to the park clearly!).

    Am off to google.....

    Ooh, exciting!

Can I ask, is there a reason why you're not going for a bike-bike? We're going for a stabliliser bike for S for her 3rd birthday, the balace bikes didn't appeal quite so much for some unfathomable reason... that said I know Spudballoo had balance bikes for her boys and they looked so much fun!

They're ment to help them learn to balance better than stabalisers, so that when they get to use a proper bike, they can already balance, so just need to work out the pedels bit. Whereas going straight to a bike with stabalisers, they have to learn to balance (as lets face it, most stabalisers are really wobbly) and pedal at the same time. I think you can get some BB that you can then turn into standard bikes (might have dreamt it).

L loves his balance bike, we have one of the wooden ones and it's not overly heavy. We liked the look of it better than the metal ones. Tesco had one reduced very recently. He will be getting a pedal bike for his birthday and we're hoping that the balance bike will help him on the way to using his pedal bike fairly quickly!

I'm voting for balance bikes, they are fun!!!

A has had his balance bike since he was 19 months (now 30 months) he loves it and can go really fast. It makes dog walking alot more bearable as we can get around our walk in a decent time without dawdling. A has a metal one. I'm not sure I would get one for a 3 yo I just don't know if you'll get your mones worth out of it maybe just go straight to a normal bike.

Harvey had a 'Like a Bike Jumper' http://www.likeabike.co.uk/likeabike_models/likeabike_jumper.php alluminium so as light as a feather.  Not cheap, I admit but it has been worth every single penny, honestly, it has been fantastic.  We had to add the brake they sell on to his as we live at the top of a hill and he would just take off down the path laughing with his feet up and I would be having a heart attack at the top of the hill shouting at Mr Snowball to "get him!"Laugh

He is four now and straight on to a proper bike, no stabilisers and rides like a demon, full of confidence and really steady.  This is his first time on his proper bike which Father Christmas brought ---->  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLSVCKan8Yg

The Like a Bike has been put in storage ready for this baby when it is old enough, I wouldn't consider stabilisers now.  Also worth noting is that Harvey is a typical heavy-handed boy and after two years of use, the bike still looks like new, it is so solid and good quality (German).

Ohhh, am likeing that one snowball, unfortunately waaaaay out of our price range Sad

Hannah, I though most BB were for 3-6yo's? I'm not overly worried if it doesn't get a huge amount of use as F will no doubt be using it too and he's 17 months now. I can't imagine O enjoying a bike with stabilisers as much, I think he'd get frustrated.

Dammit snowball, now I want a fancy one and it's all your fault Wink

I've seen good reviews of isla bikes and they're a bit cheaper than the like a bike

  • Re: Balance bikes

Thanks Japnart.  My local toy shop which is where we got Harvey's bike from has Like a Bike Jumpers with £20 off if it helps at all?  http://www.ptolemytoys.co.uk/716/Likeabike-LikeaBike-Jumper-Metal-Bike.html

Thanks for the recommendations, and the link snowball. Our budget is probably about £40 tops so right at the bottom of the market. I sooo want to get a nice one though.

We live in Germany, where every child has a balance bike before they get a proper bike (it´s just the norm here), and most kids can then ride a proper bike without stabilisers from the age of 4. We bought our first daughter a bike from Kettler (speedy 12.5") for her 3rd birthday - it´s a metal one with a brake - just found it here:

    http://www.towerstoys.co.uk/towerstoys/final.asp?id=1452&manufacturer=Kettler

I looked into it quite a lot before buying, and bought the one recommended by the German equivalent of "Which". It cost me around 40 Euros. From their test results, they found that kids actually prefer the metal ones because they come in different colours! In addition, the wooden ones are a lot more money here. They also said that the brake wasn´t necessary as it´s generally quicker and thus safer for kids to brake by just putting their feet down. Obviously, this isn´t so great for their shoes but I can honestly say my daughter never used the handbrake (mind you, there are no big hills around here either). She transferred to a pedal bike at around 3years 8months and was away within a couple of hours of starting - without stabilisers - I was gobsmacked!! The pedal bikes here all have backwards pedalling to brake, so she still doesn´t use a handbrake at the age of 4.5!

My youngest daughter was so desperate to start cycling too, we got her an extra small balance bike at the age of 18 months from a brand called "Puky", which is the biggest selling brand in Germany (more expensive than Kettler though). Just like this one, but in red:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Puky-Learner-Bike-Medium-LRM-Ocean-Blue-4056_W0QQitemZ260508806296QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Bikes_GL?hash=item3ca788ec98

She has just turned 2 and is a demon on the thing - she can really shift, so much so that I can´t take her out on it now as I´m 27 weeks pregnant with twins and I just can´t keep up with her anymore! She is already asking for pedals as she sees her older sister cycling, but that will have to wait a bit ´cos her legs are still too short!

On the other hand, I was out with a friend of mine at the weekend whose 7.5 year old wasn´t intersted in the balance bike when she was younger and therefore still can´t ride a proper bike. They were trying to teach her at the weekend - she can pedal fine, but she does not have her balance yet at all. In the end we suggested removing the pedals to turn it into a balance bike so that she could learn. It´s much easier to learn the pedalling once you´ve got your balance than the other way around.

Good luck with whatever you decide, but for what it´s worth, I think balance bikes are worth their weight in gold!!

Just wanted to add that I would definitely get a 12.5" for a 3 year old. The Puky is only a 10" and although it says from 2yrs of age, my 25 month old can already ride the bigger one.

They probably are for 3-6yo's but H is in to bikes in a massive way. He's a bit of a pushy dad Laugh when it comes to them and even bought him a big boy bike for christmas! Which is far too big for A and is in the garage untill he grows into it.
