  • Anyone got a Cabriofix seat without the base?

Wondering if anyone uses the Cabriofix just with a 3 point seatbelt, and not with one of the Maxi Cosi bases?

None of the bases have been tested with the car we're looking to get so I was wondering if it's a good seat just using a 3 point seatbelt, and how easy it is to use & get in and out?

    TIA! x

    Hi Hepburn

I've not got one but I'm sure I've read that you can use them without the isofix base. Big Smile

Thanks Kath Smile Yep it does seem they can be used without the base, I just have no idea how!

Is strapping a seat in quite easy?!

You can use them without the base, it just depends on whether you want to, and how often you're going to be getting the car seat in and out. If it's going to get put in their and rarely come out, then as isofix base isn't going to be massively useful when weighed up against the cost.

We have the base for our cabriofix because it just means that I can click the seat into and out of the car quickly and easily, for me it was worth the £100odd it cost just to simplify my life.

If the car you're looking at getting has isofix, then it'll work fine, if not, there are easybases which with the seatbelt but mean you can still pop the car seat in and out.

I did. Very easy to do. Lap bit goes over the seat and fastens, then the across body bit goes round the back of the seat.

Once you get the hang of it, yes, it can be easy, but it'll be a faff if you're in a hurry, or doing it several times a day (as I would be). For me, the more times I'm doing, the more times I could potentially not strap it in properly, if I was rushing, and that just isn't worth the hassle really.

Thanks Aims. In an ideal world we'd get the base and it's budgeted for so that's no problem.

It's the fact the Cabriobix with the base hasn't been tested in our model of car (according to maxi cosi themselves) that worries me, they say the cabriofix shouldn't be used with any of the bases in our car as none have been tested....?

The only thing they say is tested is to have the cabriofix strapped in without any kind of base....

Francesa - Good to know it's not too difficult. I can't see us needing to do it that often really, maybe twice a day maximum, not even that though.

What we might do is order the seat with the travel system but hold off getting the base and see if the different bases are tested over the next few months. Then we can buy a base nearer the time if maxi cosi have tested them with our car.

We don't have the base and it's not recommended in our car.  Using the seatbelt has never been a problem TBH, it can be a bit of a faff if you are doing it a lot during the day but once or twice is fine (I find it more of a faff now I have to get two in the car...but at least the baby doesn't wriggle when they are strapped in)!

It might be worth asking someone who is a specialist car seat fitter?  If the car has isofix, I think the only reason you might not be able to use the isofix base would be if there's underfloor storage or something similar!

If you're basing your choice of car seat on the safety ratings - the cabriofix only comes out top when used with isofix I think - will happily be corrected by someone more knowledgable though!

I use two without bases... I couldn't justify the cost of buying them with so much else to buy for twins, even though the lovely Madonna had leant me her seats.

It's no hassle to fit them in with a seatbelt, I actually feel safer using them with the belt as I worry about the bases malfunctioning... never heard of them malfunctioning, but you know where you are with a seatbelt IYKWIM?

Thanks all Smile It's good to know it's not too difficult to use with the seatbelts.

I think we'll buy it and the rest of the travel system without the base, then go nearer the time when baby is due and look at the bases with a specialist car fitter once the car is delivered (we don't have it yet!).

We've chosen the cabriofix as it goes with our travel system, is a good price and seems like a safe option. I'm not overly fussed about the Which best buy recommendations which are I think what says its only a best buy if used with the base?

I knew you lot would help ratify my thinking! x

It's not just that it's the best buy with the base, it only comes top rated in the safety ratings if you use the isofix base. So if you were basing your decision on having the safest car seat, then if you can't have the base then some people would rather go for a different seat.

FWIW H's car isn't listed on the Maxi Cosi website but mine is, when we took my car to Halfords to have the base fitted I told the guy we were buying a britax for H's car as the maxi cosi wasn't compatable according to their website and he said that the maxi cosi does fit H's car and they have certain safety things they check for when they fit them in and as long as it meets that criteria then they will fit them in the car (regardless of what it says on Maxi Cosi website). Have you got a Halfords nearby you could ask?
