  • Price of wedding cakes?

Was at a wedding fair on Sunday and was speaking to the owner of a cake company, she said her average price would be around £395 for my cake even with a fairly simple design – is this because I need to cater for 120 people (these are day guests only – evening guests just wouldn’t get a piece I guess!) or is it just because wedding cakes are generally expensive?

Another company that was recommended to me quoted me £395 minimum, going up to around £470. For me I just don’t think a cake is important enough and would like to spend that extra £200 or so on something else (especially since we’ve gone slightly over budget for the bridesmaids).

What have you paid/are you paying for your cake, if you don’t mind me asking? Are they all going to be around that price and if so I’m probably better off just going with an M&S one, right?

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

Hi, I too am not fussed about cake and can't justify the prices. I was thinking of an M&S one, I imagine they're fine as M&S are usually pretty good! I think they were about £199 decorated (even less plain ready to decorate) for the number of people you're looking to feed and they do a 'cutting' cake for any extra portions or if you wanted to save a tier.

I'm with you on this one.  silly amount of money for a cake.  i will be visiting M & S nearer the time and adding a little decoration myself.  supermarkets like Asda & tesco also sell them.

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

I was also getting similar quotes and also couldnt justify it. If im spending money on cakes I want it really special and wow!

Found ours in choccywoccydoodah's house cakes. We are having either one big one or three different ones of varying sizes, similar to these 100 people = £130

These were the best pictures I could find from google as I cant get pictures from their website. Obviously my cakes will be bigger.

Thanks all. I will take a look at Choccywoccydoodah!

This is what I was thinking about the M&S ones - £199 is definitely more like it, it's great you can get the extra cuttings and I could even order a plain one and get my florist to add some flowers to it. Plus you can order them online - much less hassle!

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

We were going to get an M&S cake but then found someone who will do us a four tier cake for £250 including jewel 'crowns' to decorate it and also deliver.

That was the one thing that put me off M&S cakes, having to collect and deliver it myself and worrying something would happen on one of the journeys.

The woman doing ours in lovely. She's trying different gluten free recepies as both my dad and niece have Coeliac disease and also, who doesn't like someone who comes to your house and brings cake?! Laugh

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

I think they do go on the amount of people it feeds and also the detail on it. When my son was christening the price of the cake went up with the numbers.

We paid £280 (9 years ago) for our cake which fed 150 people and had 4 tiers and a lot of detail on it.

My mum who recently remarried spent £115 on her cake which fed 75 people and was 2 tiers and  pretty simple. (same cake lady).

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

I've just ordered my cake and its £150 for a 3 tier which will serve about 200 portions.  We've also ordered a fruit cake for cutting with is £55 with about 50 servings.

Total of 250 servings for £205 which I thought was pretty good.  Way more than we need right enough but I like cake.....lol

I think it depends which part of the country you are in.

Gillsy that's a bargain! I'm in Kent/South East, this must make a difference.

Will have to do more hunting I think, and at least I have M&S as a fall back option if not. Hmmm Confused

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

I will also be opting for an M&S cake - The hotel manager where we are getting married said the Markies cakes are fantastic. Also (not sure if this is true tho), one of the florists I spoke to said that in June, M&S cakes are normally 3 for 2..... Do I risk leaving it til June to find out....?? mmm

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

II went to a wedding fayre last weekend and the price for a 3 tier choc cake with bits stuck to it like this -  was about £300

thats about £300 more than we want to spend on a cake so i think i am going to have a go at making it myself.

the cake is soooo unimportant to me - i would rather put that £300 behind the bar and people can get drinks instead - i know what id prefer!

Marie, I'd leave it! From what I read online you only need to order it 21 days in advance so you should be fine!

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

We are paying £280 for ours.  It's 3-tier and the bottom 2 tiers will feed 120 (we're keeping the top tier).  That includes all the materials (the bases, ribbon and separators) and unlimited samples of cake and sugar flowers.  It's also hand-beaded which taked ages with 2 flower arrangements, one on each of the bottom two tiers.  Those quotes seem steep to me...

Stazzle I am wondering if it's the Old Kent factor again, we are paying about £460 for our cake, it's for 140 people and has a lot of detail on it and it's tastes wonderful. Our cake man has lot's of different designs and some are alot cheaper than we are paying.

Thing is to us the cake was quite important, it's one of the days symbols in a way, like the dress, the flowers and the cake so we were more than happy to splash out. This is ours except we are having 3 tiers

  • Re: Price of wedding cakes?

Juicy, that is a lovely cake (looks yum too!) I just would never want to spend £460 - different things are important to different couples though I guess!

Shoe - exactly, I just can't drum up very much enthusiasm for the cake and would definitely rather it spent in other areas - the bar being a very good example! Laugh

Jem179 - I think £280 is pretty good for what you're getting. I think that would be around the top end of what I'd ideally want to pay (even though it's still a lot when you think it's just a cake!)
