  • "Most mental recipe in the world, ever" competition

I'm having great fun today reading the Pioneer Woman blog - she's a fab writer and takes great pics of food. But many of her recipes are just insane - if all Americans cook like that, it's no wonder they've got an obesity crisis over there. The butter! The weird processed food in tins! But so far the prize for the weirdest recipe goes to this:

    Any other contenders?

I made those croissants-out-of-a-tin as a project in Food Tech when I was 12 Laugh* I can't believe that I passed the project, but some people just made toast (insert rant about food education in this country yadda yadda).

H has a minging recipe which involves mixing baked beans with fried onions, balsamic vinegar and loads of cheese, and eating it with pasta. Ick!

*not with the apples and fizzy stuff though - I have to admit it looks kinda lush if fantastically lardy

Do you want me to dig out my old recipe books from the 50s, 60s and 70s?  There are some horrors in there!

I think it sounds quite nice... although I am not exactly sure what Mountain Dew is! Laugh

That coffee cake on the first page looks divine.

I watched a gastric band doc on cable years ago, and the lady shown was one of those "I don't know why I am so large" people. I was sympathetic until they showed here and her husband making some chicken dish with a whole pack of butter. For two of them. I think the answer was all there...

Do you read Hannah's Country Kitchen? She has some weird and wonderful cakes, but not mental I must admit!

I'll read the blog in a moment, but can I nominate "mulled lager" from a 1980s Mary Berry cookbook?  It's lager, mulled.  That's it, but for sheer unpleasantness and insanity I think it's a good un.  The smell alone was enough to make people sick.

R-A, I remember no1 son doing a cookery project in school (in the 3 days he was in secondary school ROTFL) and he was the only one who cooked something - he made burgers, which is hardly cordon bleu.  He said most people either took a ready made pizza or a packet of cake mix.  Sheesh.

In other news, can Americans not say the word croissant? Wtf is a crescent roll?

  • Re: "Most mental recipe in the world, ever" competition

O.M.G. utterly speechless at that blog. she even made berries and yoghurt a sat fat fest!

hmmm, I don't think I can think of any odd recipes. although MILs predilection for chopping up those rank pre-formed 'ham' slices and adding them to ready made meals / sauces to 'make them more interesting' does also make me want to vom Laugh

She is a fab writer though, and to be fair sshe is cooking for people who are basically outdoors and active all day. None of them look at all fat in the pics Laugh

An american acquantance of mine sent me her recipe for fruit salad, she was sure it would encourage my boys to "eat healthy"

    Yummy Fruit Salad

    3 Red Delicious apples
    2 Granny Smith apples
    2 bananas
1/2 C Caramel sauce or Carmel apple dip
3 SNICKERS® candy bars (regular, not peanut butter)
    small container of Cool Whip
    Pretzels
Chop up the apples, bananas and candy bars. Mix Cool Whip with 1/2 cup of caramel sauce or apple dip, then mix with fruit and candy bars. Crush pretzels to serve on top just before serving. Chill overnight. A very yummy salad.
