I have to say I've never heard this either! But I've never noticed anyone leaving two spaces after a full stop either. Does anyone know where leaving a space before and after a comma came from? I've got colleagues at work that would write something with a comma like this - word , then another word. Is that right?

No. One space after, none before.

It makes my brain hurt when I have to read things with spaces before commas, or where commas are used incorrectly. Also when people don't use paragraphs, or end every sentence with a varying number of exclamation marks.

And I always use two spaces after a full stop.

Re: One space or two after a full stop?

I was taught to use two and I still use two now. I don't think I always stick to it religiously online, but when I'm typing letters etc, I most definitely do.

Re: One space or two after a full stop?

Trickers:

I've got colleagues at work that would write something with a comma like this - word , then another word. Is that right?

No. One space after, none before.

The only punctuation mark I put a space either side of is a hyphen, if used as punctuation. If I use a hyphen to mean "to", as in "9-5", I leave out the spaces.

I wonder if I'm the only person to put a space between numbers and units e.g. 50 %.

Re: One space or two after a full stop?

aarchk:

I cant stand it when people mix up 'yours faithfully' with 'yours sincerely' when signing off letters

I hate Oxford commas.
I have to say I've never heard this either! But I've never noticed anyone leaving two spaces after a full stop either. Does anyone know where leaving a space before and after a comma came from? I've got colleagues at work that would write something with a comma like this - word , then another word. Is that right?

No. One space after, none before.

Re: One space or two after a full stop?

aarchk:

On another note - I cant stand it when people mix up 'yours faithfully' with 'yours sincerely' when signing off letters.

I was always taught 'never be sincere to a sir'. As for 'Your, you are and you're' I have never had any problems knowing which is correct. Is a very basic thing is it not?
