We had a cake that served 120 people, and during the evening we had 100 guests in total - we wanted a bigger cake because my family like cake. Unfortunately, the sliced cake was set out away from the evening buffet, so a lot of people missed out on it and about 50% of it was uneaten. The next morning, we took away the left overs but it was snapped up within a couple of days because family kept saying "I missed your wedding cake. Where was it? Oooo you have left overs? Can we have some?"

We had a four tier cake which was put out as dessert for the evening buffet. It all went!

We had a 3 tier cake but the top too were 'fake' tiers and we had 2 larger cutting cakes in the kitchen because my Mum was worried the 3 tiers wouldnt be enough. We cut the cake during the meal and it was served with coffee/tea during the speeches. We had 90 guests. Anything that was left was put out with the evening buffet and it all went. Not a single piece left.

We are having two 3 tier cakes made - a chocolate one and a fruit one. The chocolate will be the one on display, that we actually cut, and we will have it cut and served on platters. The fruit cake will be served too, but some will be kept behind to be posted to guests that can't attend. :) xx

Probably about 150 people, but we are factoring in that not everyone will have a piece. But then if it's only fruit cake thats been kept in the kitchen and not on display, I'm not too bothered about having some left over. Think the chocolate cake will go quickly, we are having it served with the buffet :)

We are having a top tier which we will be cutting and then cupcakes for each guest. They won't be getting served as desert so will be going out with the hot rolls later on at night.

This is partly why we have decided to have a small cutting cake and mini cakes instead of a tiered cake. My junior and mini bridesmaids will be handing the mini cakes out to guests after it is cutting of the cake, each mini cake will be in a cellophane bag tied with a ribbon, If the guests wish to eat it then fine and well if they don't we are hoping they will at least take it home with them. We really don't want to transport loads of cake on the 2 hours or so journey back home and then it go to waste.

We're having a 8" top tier (for cutting) and 60 cupcakes for the day guests, there'll be a further 180 people coming in the evening and there'll be 50 more cupcakes displayed on the sweet/dessert table. I still don't think they'll all go but if they do, great!

It's still there... a sticky at the top of the forum...

We had 3 tiers from M&S, 100 guests and still had cake left over.

I wish they hadn't cut it all up as it would have lasted longer :(

Oooh good point! I hadn't really thought of this. We were considering having enough cupcakes so that each guest could have one in the evening, but after reading this I'm wondering whether 100 cupcakes is far too many!? Hmm..

I've been thinking about this too, most weddings I've been to I've either not seen the cake or have not wanted to eat it after all the other food (and I love cake!). I don't really want to serve it straight after a 3 course meal because it will just get left on the table so I think it may go out with the evening buffet. I've asked the venue to hold back a quarter of each tier as they are different flavours and I will give some to close family and friends when they go the next morning and keep some for myself

i had a 12,10 and 8 inch cake- 2 x fruit 1 x chocolate- all the chocolate cake went, had half the 12inch cake left the 8inch fruit was left uncut and all my cake was finished within 2 weeks, i hate fruit cake and my dad loves the damn thing so he was eating it flat out and i gave most of it away so i could get rid of it.. we had 68 day and 150 evening

I've been to loads of weddings where I didn't even remember seeing the cake let alone eating it! Me and OH were talking about this the other day and have come up with a plan. The hotel have told us we will be kicked out of the wedding breakfast room for 1 hour whilst they turn it arond for the evening do. There is a lovely lawn right outside the room so we are going to have a garden party serving our tea, coffee and wedding cake on the lawn with crocket, mini cricket, boules and other light activities to keep everyone occupied (and stops them wandering off!).

Have you checked out Marks and Spencers traditional wedding cakes on line? You can get a 4 tier cake which serves just over 100 for £98 - bargain! They do fruit or sponge and you can buy pillars or foam supports to build up the tiers. check it out:

You order it online or in store and pick it up a couple of days before the wedding. Me and OH have pretty much decided this is what we are going to do because cake always gets wasted at weddings.
