Aswell as my own wedding this summer I'll also be attending one as a guest. I hate my legs and prefer to wear long dresses to the fitted knee length 'wedding guest' type ones you see in debenhams etc. I'd like to wear a floral maxi like one below but I haven't been to a wedding in a while, will this look odd? Or is wearing a maxi dress quite usual.

We're also a little sniffy about the government rules on civil ceremonies, don't like many of the locations, don't like the wording, find it all very 'procedural'.

So we opted for a Humanist ceremony and love, love, love the result.

But in order to be married legally (legal in Scotland, but not here) we're going to a Registry office 8 days prior and doing what we must. It's in an office, no frills, very practical. We'll be legally married. BUT in our eyes we won't be married-married. The marriage is so much more than that. It's the vows we've written. It's sharing with our loved ones. It's the story of us that will be told on the day. Etc.

Every time I think people are starting to 'get' it, someone asks about the 'actual' ceremony, or 'real' wedding. I.e. the legal bit that we refer to as the 'pre-wedding'. And it upsets me. We've been so clear from the start. And obviously we consider the main event the REAL wedding. Crikey, the hundreds of hours I've put in to making invites, making favours, cutting bunting, researching, planning, shopping, buying!!! I'm very sincere about this wedding and so people potentially viewing it as the party after the real wedding could not be more wrong.

I know I mustn't let it bug me, but it just does.

Winter Wedding vs Summer Wedding

I joined a few weeks back but for some reason can not log in and there is no record of me! anyhoo I only posted 3 times so not to worry.....

We're having the reception at my mums house, so were thinking of just bulk buying a load of wine & beer, and making up some jugs of cocktails to fit with the colour scheme. My brother built a bar a few years back that should fit nicely in the corner of the garden.

I'm a bit worried about a totally free bar though; there's at least one person in the guest list who will almost certainly go overboard!
Sorry this is abit of a rant I just don't know what to do now.

My partner and I had been toying with the idea of going to florida and doing the theme parks together, when one night we were chatting and the idea of getting married while we were out there on a beach, just the two of us came up. We got engaged Feb 2012. So we got some quotes and checked when best to go and we chose January would be best so it wasnt too hot. I asked my parents if they minded if we went away and got married they were fine then we asked his parents... and this is where it all fell apart.

His mum is really upset we would leave them out of it. We offered to have a party here afterwards but she wasnt happy with that either. She wants to see her son get married, which I do understand. So we said we would look at what we can find here in the UK.

That was 2 weeks ago and I cant find anything. my partner is stressing out as he didnt want a big thing, no formality. He doesnt want to be the centre of attention and hates what it is turning out to be. I feel like I can't have what I want all because other people feel so strongly on what we should have. I have got some quotes off some lovely places but now it is turning out that we can't afford to do a uk ceremony AND go to florida. Florida was what started the whole idea so the last thing I want to do is drop that.

I am so stressed out, I don't know what to do, what I should do or shouldn't. I don't care about a big party I just want to marry the love of my life in a romantic setting we have both been talking about for ages.

Are you buying your OH

A wedding gift?
Does anyone out there know of any pretty locations in the above areas that fit the bill of a barn conversion, outside wedding venue or land that either has or will allow a marquee to be erected? Any friendly farmers with those facilities? We just don't know how to go about finding out whether any country houses, homes, farms, stately homes in the area would allow a marquee to be set up or already have one that we could use a private caterer etc and really put our own stamp on the day....alternatively any nice barn conversions that are a blank canvas....

Thanks so much in advance for any help!!

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/woman/4912246/Dawn-OPorter-Make-a-mesh-of-getting-wed.html

Apparently she was Dawn Porter, but changed it to Dawn O'Porter, when she and Chris O'Dowd met (apologies if this is old news to some - I hadn't read about it before). According to the Sun article it's part of a new trend of 'meshing' two surnames to keep a bit of yours and a bit of your partners. This made me giggle because any of the combinations of mine and my OH's surnames sound ludicrous, however hard I try. But I found it interesting because I'm not entirely sure about changing my name and quite like seeing the other options out there.

As it's meant to be the new trend, i'd never heard of it but just wondered whether others have done it/thinking of doing it or thoughts on it? I've heard of double-barrelled surnames and obviously keeping your own is becoming more common, but not combining the two, maybe I've been living under a rock?
