  • Dog people - Leonbergers

I saw a man sat having a coffee today, at his feet were 4, yes 4, of these beasts!

They were gooooooorgeous and so soppy with huge big brown eyes, the google image doesn't even begin to convey how big they were.  Wizzy loved them and now I want one, even though they're bigger than me and I'm not allowed pets.

I wish I had taken my phone out so I could take a photo, if I see him out and about again I will.

    Awww!

  • REDog people - Leonbergers

Dude, if you had seen them you would never have left, they were all laying on the floor at his feet.  Blurry massive they are!

Loads of people were stopping to stroke them and talk to the man, he's like a local celebrity now Laugh

There's a guy in Winchester with two of these, they are so gorgeous, I want to ride them!  Lovely fluffy faces, really good-natured too.

Still wouldn't call one Leon though.

Far too much hair.  Get her a Vizsla instead.

Funnily enough our old Vizsla was also called Wizzy, although that had more to do with her bladder disorder.

You have no idea how appropriate that comment is at the moment ROTFLWeep

I quite often meet one when out walking my two.  It's the most sweet natured dog, but as you say HH they are massive dogs.  I couldn't imagine owning 4!

There's a lovely one who came to our puppy classes but the hair! It gets everywhere. Although you could set up a side line in dog hair jumpers, I suppose. Laugh

We saw one of these when we were on holiday in Cornwall last September.

My 3 year old son, thought it was a lion and absolutely loved it.

If I ever do get a dog, it will now be one of these. Beagles previously topped my list, but from what I have read, despite their size, these would require less space and exercise.

Gorgeous dogs! Hugo has fallen in love with one in our local woods. He just runs around chasing her and woofing. She's about twice his size Laugh

Think of the hairdressers' bills with four hairy dogs like that!

Def get a Vizsla, less hair and fabbily gorgeous.

Did I mention we have a Viz? He is a lovely boy!

    Bee-yoo-tiful!!

Their 'official' use is as water rescue dogs. We often take our dog to a big lake near Cambridge for a walk and there's often a group there training them to pull people (dummies) out of the water lifesaver style.

I met the one at Screech Owl Sanctuary - was this the one you met? He was sooooo gorgeous!

Absolutely stunning.  I am on the look out for a St Bernard or Newfoundland playmate for my labrador..  Unfortunately with two young children, paying hundreds of pounds for a dog isn't an option.  I have registered with as many sites as I can hoping to rehome one of these.  Obviously we are aware of the day to day costs of keeping one of these and it isn't a problem.  We are at home all day so it wouldn't be on its own.

If anybody knows of any Newfoundlands or St Bernards needing a new loving home for life,  please let me know x

PS - sorry to gatecrash your post Heidi !!!

Leonberger's don't really have an official use as such. They have been used to guard flocks of animals and to pull small carts as well. Because they are similar in size and temperament to the Newfoundland, more are being used as water rescue dogs these days but are not so well suited as their coat isn't as water proof as the Newfie.  Imagine how long it would take to dry one of those!
