  • Can a 2 year old manage without a pram?

Just wondering how much walking an average just turned two year old could do? Does it make any difference if they were an earlyish walker? (10 months ish).

Mine will be in 2 weeks and he's still in a pram, I wouldn't expect him to walk everywhere.

Alice has been able to walk around town since she turned 2 without any trouble. She could walk for a good hour before a rest if we needed her to. I do think her early walking helped her walking stamina.

Depends on her mood to start with as well, and the little life bag too helps.

Put it this way, if the new baby had been here earlier we still wouldn't have bothered with a double buggy.

My sisters two youngest (almost 2 and 3) both use the p&t most journeys, its very rare for either of them to walk any distance.. and both were walking really really young.

  • Re: Can a 2 year old manage without a pram?

It depends how much walking you do.

Max was 2 and three weeks when Mimi arrived. I never had a double. I carried her for a bit and by the time she could go in the stroller (3 months) he was happy to walk everywhere. But we don't do that much walking.

Disclaimer: I may, of course, be talking utter drivel.

I never got a double - Sam was 22 months when Daniel was born and I sued a sling for the first 6 months.  I work 3 days a week and it isn't that often that we used to walk and great distance.  From age 3 Sam was able to use to buggy board properly (used to climb off all the time before that) when we did longer walks - he can mange 30 mins easily but does start to tire after about 45 mins. He stoped having a daytime sleep when he was about 2 1/2 which helped.

Or another way to look at the question is "can you manage a 2 year old without a pram ?"

G's good at walking but is currently demonstrating her independence at running off an investigating all manner of things, especially when I'm at the checkout.  Fun. She tantrums at her reins / backpack, so that's not a huge help either and I'm too weak to carry her now.

Thanks. Its one of those piece of string questions isn't it?

Sounds like 30 minutes shouldn't be a non starter but who knows! She prefers being out of the pram now and happily trots round holding my hand or on reins where I let her but that could change.

I meant that part of it too! As in you have a 2 year old and need to walk say 15/30 minutes to get somewhere, how does it actually work out?

    Sounds trying LadyF Hug

I allow 45 mins to do a 20 min walk if my 2 1/2 yr old is going to be walking, even then he occassionally has to be forcibly strapped into the pushchair if we are going to be late for pre-school due to too much faffing around on his part.

My toddler loves to walk. She was 2 years 2mths when R was born and a double would habe been a waste of money. She walks and goes on the buggy board with no probs. If i really need her in a pram (if im rushing) i put the baby in a sling and her in the stroller. She is however a very good toddler who rarely runs off. A friend of mine had to get a double as her 2 year old would be all over the place.

L will be 2 this week.  She'll walk back from the duck pond which takes me half an hour pushing the buggy, but it's over an hour when she walks.  We couldn't walk there and back

She was an early-ish walker (11 months) but is not a very physical child. Plus a lot of the places we can walk to, like nursery and town, tend to tire her out so it's not fair to expect her to walk both ways on top IYSWIM.  It's not such an issue if you're just going out specifically "for a walk".

I'm also worried about managing a buggy with newborn plus a toddler on reins.  It's tiring enough just managing empty buggy plus toddler, and I think it's bound to be harder with a baby in the pram.  We've bought a 2nd hand double.  It's for me rather than her.

Congratulations btw, I didn't know you were expecting again!

At two years, Charlotte wouldn't need the pram if we were going about our local town, to a few shops for some things.  I worked really hard at getting her to walk, to hold hands and to stop using the reins and we've not used them since she was around two.  I think she was a very good walker at that age, thinking about her peers.  There were definitely times that we needed her puschair though, if we were going longer distances or if I was in a hurry.

Flynn could have walked a good distance at 2, however he was a complete nightmare and used to run off etc.  It's only this past few months that he'll actually walk properly with me.  We still used his pushchair until this summer (3.5yrs!) if we were going shopping or anywhere where I knew he couldn't be trusted to stay with me!!
