  • Anyone else working Christmax Eve & Boxing Day?

I'm starting my new job tomorrow, and I can't wait, but I have to work Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

    Which sucks.

I don't really know what to do for Christmas day, we don't really like the idea of going out for dinner or lunch anywhere as I won't have been paid from my new job yet, but to be stuck in our shared house with just us here is a bit crap tbh.

We'd been planning on going to his Mum's this year (first year I've known her!) so it's a bit of a let down.

What are you doing if you're working?

I am working Christmas eve from 10am 'til 4pm, so we are going out as a family for a meal that evening. I am not working Christmas day, so we will be having our first ever quiet one at home, just the 3 of us. Back in work at 10am Boxing day.

  • Re: Anyone else working Christmax Eve & Boxing Day?

I'm not working Christmas Eve (purely because it's a Wednesday and I don't work Wednesday) or Boxing Day (work shut/bank holiday) but OH is working both.

Christmas Eve is my brother's birthday so we'll (me and son) spend half the day doing last minute things for Christmas day (peeling spuds, wrapping last presents etc.) and half the day doing something with my brother.

Christmas day it feels like we've got the world and his dog coming - there'll be 10 of us.  Us 3, my parents and brother, OH's mum, step-dad, sister and her partner.

I've not really thought about Boxing Day yet except OH's sister and partner are staying over (and OH's at work) so I'll have to play hostess for at least half the day I imagine.

When I worked in hotels I worked Christmas day one year - it wasn't too bad except by the time 300 Christmas lunches had gone by me I thought I'd never eat turkey again!

  • Re: Anyone else working Christmax Eve & Boxing Day?

I work until midday on Christmas Eve.  I love the hussle and bustle of London, seeing everyone do mad last mintue dashes to the shops or travelling with cases to see loved ones.

We don't really do much Christmas Eve evening, maybe a drink in the pub and cook the meat for Christmas Day itself but that's it.

Boxing Day is our actual Christmas Day in our house as it's when we have the children.

  • Re: Anyone else working Christmax Eve & Boxing Day?

    Thanks both.

I'm just not sure I can be bothered to make proper Christmas dinner for just the two of us. OH won't eat turkey anyway so it'll just be a chicken breast thing for him and I want duck for a change or lobster so may have to do that myself....if Aldi still have cheap lobster that is!

I am working Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as it isnt a recognised holiday here.  My boss has been generous though and said I can do really reduced hours and then log in from home.  My mum is flying over on 23 December and has agreed to do a feast for us, so there will be 10 of us on Christmas Day night eating and drinking to our hearts content as Boxing Day is officially a weekend here so no one has to get up early.

Now we are trying to decide what to do for New Years Eve.  Theme de jour is either a beach bonfire/BBQ although I found out today that Shakira will be in town doing a concert...maybe I need to go and shake my Christmas excess induced shammy about!  I cant decide if thats going to be a great concert or just a tad sad....!!!  Off to see George Michael this week, saw Kylie last week and am now thinking about Shakira!  :-)

Tillybean, your christmas sounds fab, even if you are working.

I work most Christmas eves.  I work Mon-Weds so i'm doing the lead up to christmas this year but I actually like working Christmas Eve, it has a nice feel to it.  We're usually told to go early, 3pm is about the latest i've ever left the office but then we shut until New Year.

MrSun has a new job this year so we don't get the whole holiday off together but at least he's off Christmas day and then has the weekend.

  • Re: Anyone else working Christmax Eve & Boxing Day?

I am, yes - Christmas is just like any other day here, and it's only because my immediate boss is understanding that we can even take the 25th off.

I love spending Christmas with just the two of us. We go for a posh but light lunch/brunch after church at the embassy, go for a walk and spend the late afternoon cooking the full Christmas dinner and getting tiddly on imported sherry/cava. I do the whole turkey extravaganza - at first I thought it might be daft just for two but it was great (although it does help that neither of us minds eating leftovers - I am considering a Bridget Jones-style turkey curry buffet after Christmas this year! Laugh)

I understand your H doesn't like turkey, but surely he could have something more exciting for his Christmas meal? Lobster sounds like a fantastic idea.

Edited because of potential amusing turkey/Turkey confusion...

  • Re: Anyone else working Christmax Eve & Boxing Day?

I finish work at noon on Christmas Eve, but Mr Beast is working nights from the 22nd until the 26th so we're not really having a Christmas :-(

I reserve the right to be odd.

I am working Christmas eve and almost always have - but will get let off early for good behaviour if I'm luck!

We will have turkey and all the trimmings on Christmas day althought it'll just be me and Mr GMT. With three dogs and four cats we don't have a problem with leftovers .... we enjoy having the day to ourselves and usually take the woofs out for a long walk in the afternoon so we don't feel too guilty for stuffing ourselves!

  • Re: Anyone else working Christmax Eve & Boxing Day?

Always work christmas eve, probably one of the only days when the customers are really nice to us Big Smile

my manager normaly lets me goa bit early and oh and i would normally toddle off down to pub but alas this year he has to work xmas day.only 7-10 am but still bit p*ssed off as we wont be able to go out and stagger home in the freezing cold at some stupid hour.

Am waiting for my manager to ask me to work boxing day but im sure he knows the answer already.Big Smile

Mentioning the embassy church, you've just reminded me of the year my friend and I lit the final candle of the christmas wreath there. We were struggling to light it, got the giggles, and ended up blowing them all out ROTFL Do they still have midnight mass there?
