I had mastitis 3 weeks ago and got rid of it with antibiotics. Today the same boob is really hurting in the same way it did then. I dont feel ill at all tho (woke up feeling really ill last time). Im massaging it like mad, feeding off it and expressing (although that doesnt seem to be working very well). I am also holdin a hot water bottle against it.

What else can i do?? Is it enevitable that this will end up as mastitis? Has anyone managed to stop it getting to the antibiotics stage?

    Anything i can try??

I had mastitis several times - so know what agony it is. However, I never needed anti-bs.  So, yes it is possible to stop it getting worse and I think you are doing everything I would.  Have you tried gravity feeding????  I used to take paracetamol and that helped a lot.  Hope it is better soon.

That is very good to know! Did you feel ill with it? I felt so bad last time and im dreading the same happening. How quickly did it clear up?

    What is gravity feeding?

Yes, I felt very ill - flu-like symptoms, aching joints etc.  Soaking in the bath and paracetamol helped. Lasted 2/3 days each time I *think* although was quite a long time ago now.  Gravity feeding is when you dangle over your LO and feed that way, on all fours for example - thus gravity helping to really drain the breast.

Alternating hot and cold flannels on the breast helps too and going without a bra if you can.

I've seen recommended on here to try to position LO at different angles 'around the clock' on the breast to help drain all sections.

It also helps to have the baby's chin pointing in the direction of the sore area.
