  • My dress shopping experience...(sorry - really long!)

I only went into 2 shops and tried about 10 dresses in each but they were soooo different!

Shop 1 - was teeny tiny and the changing rooms were so small and looked like they needed some looking after! I got my BMs to pick one dress each that they liked and the lady from the shop chose some more dresses. None of the dresses my BMs picked me really suited me unfortunately! The ones the lady picked were beautiful though and I tried on mostly Benjamin Robert dresses which really suited my shape and made my waist look so tiny! I only got to put on one veil with one of the dresses and I cried! I had never imagined myself in a dress and it didn't feel real up until that point! I didn't get to wear any shoes with the dress though, there was only one pair of size 6 shoes (I'm size 4) and felt really uncomfortable so I just went barefoot!

Those dresses were abit over budget and the lady looked so busy. She was on her own and the phone kept ringing and people kept coming into the shop and in the end we had to cut the appointment short because someone else had come in to pick up/try on her dress. I really felt for her but she just came across as a little bit too preoccupied to really focus on what I wanted. But she was nice enough and the dresses were lovely!

It was really odd the first time she used one of those cushion things on a dress that was too big for me! I had no idea what it was at first! and I was so nervous about stripping off in front of her! When she asked me to get naked I asked her if i could keep my tights on because I was really worried that she wanted my in complete starkers!! Embarrassed.

Shop 2 - was a 5 minute walk away from my house!! Which is always a very good thing! I always go past that shop on my way to work and have always admired their gorgeous dresses but for some reason I always assumed they'd be too expensive! When we walked in it was such a different place to the first shop..it was spacious, and bright and there was sooooo much room to walking around!

The lady made me feel really welcome and was really so helpful and came across as being genuinly excited about our wedding! All the dresses were beautiful and every time i tried a different dress on, the lady got a different legth veil and tiara just so I could see what it looked like! Then I would go and stand on a little step thing so i could see what the dress was like fulll length without me dragging it on the floor. They even lent me a pair of size 4 bridal shoes which were so amazingly comfy! I think i may be getting them! Wink

The changing rooms were ginormous and we had a "suite" where my BMs got to sit and browse through magazines when I was getting changed. The 2 ladies were really so nice...and when i tried on my dress they were both crying and passing the tissues around! They were very complimentary about me and my shape and that made me feel really good and special!

I tried on Ellis Bridal, Kate Sherford and White Rose dresses and ended up with a White Rose dress and they were all such good value for money, I was so shocked! I really expected them to be so much more and all the dresses looked a lot more expensive than they were! I was always open to getting my dress from the internet or China or whatever, but I can't imagine doing that now, not after the wonderful service I got - which is worth so much more!

I'm happy with only having been to 2 shops..I feel like I've had 2 very different experiences which made me realise exactly what it was that I wanted!

That's it! Sorry for going on! xxx

I think its nice to here of other peoples experiences. I was noseying at other forums today, and one had a great stickyh thread which was reccommend your local bridal shops. It was lovely to read all the nice comments people made and was very helpful too. THey should do that on here.

  • Re: My dress shopping experience...(sorry - really long!)

That's a really good idea Zippy! I agree that there should be something like that to help us out a little bit!

  • Re: My dress shopping experience...(sorry - really long!)

i went to 4 shops in total, and probably tried on about 14 dresses.

the 1st was awful, they had no other sized dresses than a 12, which i couldnt even get on and they let a skinny little 16 yr old saturday girl serve me... not good at all.

2nd shop was fabulous and gave me lots of dresses to try on that fit, various veils, tiaras, necklaces and shoes, and also got a very personal service where they spent lots of time with me.   this is where i got my dress from, and couldnt be more thrilled or happy.

3rd shop, i tried on 1 dress and didn't much like the lady who served me and the 4th, it was busy and no one came near me so me and mum just left.

my point here is i think i'd rather go to one or 2, like yourself did, who give a good service than spend days going to loads of different shops where theres no personal service and you just feel like you tried on so many that you just dont know what you like anymore.

  • Re: My dress shopping experience...(sorry - really long!)

I only tried on in three shops in the end.

1st (Grace & Lace, Ipswich) had brilliant service and I came away from there with a few "favourites".

2nd (Pronuptia, Ipswich) was an absolute nightmare. We were ignored when we first entered the shop and had to make a point of getting somebody's attention, even though we had an appointment. The woman who was supposed to be serving us kept getting called away, so would ask one of her colleagues to help "her" (i.e. me), which I found rather rude. Then we were ignored while all of the assistants went to the window to watch a wedding in the church opposite and slagged off the bride's and BMs' dresses. I felt like I was being bullied into liking a particular style of dress even though it wasn't what I wanted at all, and they kept telling me that the dress I was wearing was much better than the other one's I tried on which made me feel as if they were questioning my taste. I left in tears and felt that they had ruined whatshould have been a really special day for my mum and I. (One of the "Don't tell the Bride" episodes was in Ipswich and when they went into Pronuptia's my mum and I both admitted that we'd booed and hissed at the telly!)

3rd (Berketex, Norwich) we had great service, lots of space, as much time as we wanted and I found "the one".

Really glad to hear you've found your dress - now where are the pics?!

Actually joined in April 2008 but Hitched wiped my profile on 7th August 2009....

Oooh Pronuptia sounds like a nightmare!!

The pics of my dress are on a different thread: http://www.hitched.co.uk/Chat/forums/t/65272.aspx?PageIndex=1

None of me in the dress but hopefully you'll get the idea! xxx

Kelly29 - thats such a shame you had a bad experience with Pronuptia. I went to the one in Hatton Garden and they couldn't have been more helpful. The lady was so lovely and patient while I tried on what seemed like billions of dresses and patiently laced me into each one. Then I found the dress I wanted and they made a special appointment for me to go back on the saturday with my mum - still served by the same lady and just so helpful.

Whereas Berkertex just kept trying to get me to spend loads....guess you never can tell :-)

Ruthy - your dress is gorgeous and we want to see pics of you in it pronto so get your CBM to email them to you!!!

    xx

Ok you have got me scared now!? They make you go naked??

Im going to my first trying on session (if you dont count debenhams) next Friday and they only have size 12's so they are all going to be too big for me. So what on earth is this cushion thing???? And why do you have to take your clothes off?

    argh

  • Re: My dress shopping experience...(sorry - really long!)

places i went you didnt have to be starkers.  i was just in bra and pants, just took my bra straps down.

the cusions are just blocks they put down the back off the dress to fill it out if its too big for you so that you can see roughy how it would look if it was to fit properly

I had to strip off to my bra and nick-nacks...although for the first one I had tights on so I made sure I put my pants over my tights - a bit like a superhero! ROTFL

For the second one I just wore boxer short type pants although my fat bum was still haging out ( too much info?!!!) which must have been lovely for the poor lady at the shop! Weep

The cushions are like mini pillows which they use to put down the back of the dress if it's too big for you. It tightens the dress so it is easier to see what it would look like if it was the right size!

    Does that help?

    That's brightened my Monday morning!!

  • Re: My dress shopping experience...(sorry - really long!)

Thanks for this post Ruthy - so nice to hear how others got on when getting thier dresses... I had a nightmare in Pronuptuia to!

When I paid for my BMs dresses I had to read the shop terms & conditions - one of which was 'Underwear must be worn for all fittings' - I thought it meant the underwear you would we wearing on the day so they can do alterations.. I joked with my BM that she had to remember to wear her knickers when she went for fittings and the woman in the shop said 'You'd be surprised...'  Apparently there are plenty of women ready to get naked for a dress!  The mind boggles.
