  • Wedding emergency

Hi, going to see the Superintendent Registrar at Swindon Council today to hopefully book our wedding at the registry office there. One little problem, though. We are both UK nationals and so are our parents but apparently if you were born after 1983 and don't have a valid passport (which my fiance doesn't) you need your mum's birth certificate as well as your own. We aren't speaking to his mum at the moment so getting her certificate is and was out of the question. What the heck do i do?! Our birth certificates say where our folks were born but this law after 1983 says that's not enough. Help please!!!!

  • Re: Wedding emergency

I hadn't heard of this! I'd take his Dad's certificate instead, and hope that would suffice. What if his Mum was dead? What if she had lost her certificate? Asking for this isn't really practical is it?

I'd just ring them and ask/explain.

  • Re: Wedding emergency

Go to the Register of Births Deaths and marriages on the website online (it ends with gov.uk) and order it. It will cost you around £8.00 and you can order a copy of anyones birth certificate as long as you know their details

Can your fiance get himself a passport organised? They can do them same day - it costs more money, but might resolve this situation?

I'm sure you can request a copy of your mother's birth certificate as long as you have proof of your relationship...i've done a quick google and you definitely can in America, i'm sure i've heard of it in this country as well though - sorry i cant google more extensively at the moment!

  • Re: Wedding emergency

How difficult is it to get a passport?  Surely that would be the answer?

Thank you for the advice, guys. He refuses to get a passport on principal because he says they're a waste of money. Just going to have to explain over the phone. Not paying a £10 fee to see the registrar just to get turned away. Really wanted to book today as well. :(

Well I suppose they are if you never want to leave the UK! What about you though, don't you want to see some other countries at some point?

Does he have a driving licence?

  • Re: Wedding emergency

You really can just order it online from that website.  I use it all the time in my job.  As long as you know the date of birth and name it's fine.  It's not that expensive either

  • Re: Wedding emergency

Looking into ordering his mum's certificate. He's got driving license and I'm just thinking that I might just go ahead with the appointment and see if they'll take our other stuff (utility bills, birth certificates, driving license etc.) They surely can't need all that AND his mum's stuff. It says where our parents were born on our certificates. If not, I'll order her certificate. Thanks

Eh? £80 to let you travel the world is too much money?

Don't be fooled by their innocent looks. All Emmas Are Evil. And they're coming for you.

Why not just ring them instead of potentially wasting everyone's time?
