My alterations were £200 for a couple of inches off the bottom and a little from the sides. Admittedly, lots of appliqué removed and restitched on. Oh, and a bustle loop/button added..

I had a Maggie dress that had to be taken in by 2 sizes, shortened all round, plus a button was added for a bustle and it came to £120 with an independant seamstress, based in London.

Actually I think thats pretty good. Its costing me £160 to have alterations and a lace bolero added.

I think £120 is good value for the alterations you're seeking.  I would feel lucky to get my alterations done for that.

This. Most shops do an inclusive package which usually starts from £100. My BF needed just an inch of organza taken up off the bottom and they tried to charge her for the standard £100 package, she kicked up a stink but even then only got it down to £80.

I think alterations via shops will only get more expensive as shops are losing out to pre-owned dresses now, and also people are catching on to the fact that once the dress is paid for, the bride is actually free to take it away and organise her own alterations, which isn't something shops like to let on about.

All in all, suck it up or find someone private but it will probably turn out a very similar price - plus if anything went wrong (like me and my train getting cut off, ha!) you'd have more recourse via a shop.

£120 is pretty standard for what they're asking - though it's very steep for what they're doing, in real terms most places will charge the same amount, or more, although it wouldn't take long to do those alterations.

I think from what I know about wedding dress shops this seems pretty standard. Having said that I've just had my alterations done by a local seamstress as the shop I bought my dress from closed down. I've had it taken up, a lace put in instead of the zip and made in to sweetheart neckline, plus a small repair. I was expecting a fairly big bill but she did it all for £45. and her work is excellent - shows the mark up that the bridal shops are making on alterations.

Sorry to pee on peoples' fireworks, but my alterations were free as OH's granny did them - is there someone you know who would be able to help?

I got my alterations through the woman recommended by the dress shop. I got three buttons added for a bustle, a bit taken off the bottom, taken in at the bust and the neckline changedm from straight to sweetheart and she charged me £30! DO you have to get it done in the dress shop or can you have a look about?
