Does anyone worry about having wedding "fads"?

  • Does anyone worry about having wedding "fads"?

Wierd title I know, I don't know how to word it really lol! I joined hitched when we set a date and have seen so many things that I'd never have thought of. Examples are things such as: cupcake towers, brooch bouqets, Mr and Mrs Letters, candy carts, etc ,etc. Now I have a wedding thats probably a lot different to the one I'd originally have created.

But, I do sometimes wonder if the stuff I'm planning is maybe a bit fad-y and obvious? Unoriginal maybe, or too try hard? There are things that tend to be popular on the boards and I'm not sure if I feel they are done a lot because I see them here, or if they are known as popular in regular life, if you get what I mean?

I'm currently trying to decide if to book a photo booth. I like the idea but have a feeling it might be a bit try hard, and that people are perfectly capable of having a good time without additional props such as that.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone! These things are all popular for a reason, they are great. I'm having a brooch bouqet myself Laugh

I got worried about this so I decided, I going to do everything so it defines me and my OH.

I'm turning up in my own car with ribbons on because I love my car. Other bits and bobs are going to be things that the guests will be like "thats so you!" so that I don't need to worry if it's unoriginal, because its about us :D x

I am totally with you on this one! When we first started planning I was adamant that I wanted a sweetie table but I have really gone off them now cos' everyone seems to be doing it.

Photo booths aren't really our thing but if you really like the idea then do it.

We are having a mini casino at our wedding, very faddy indeed but OH had Insisted!

I think this seems a good way to view it when making a decision about something.

We have personally not gone for anything I would consider to be a fad, but things that we love and want.

Good thread! You are totally right. When I first started wedding planning I thought sweetie table were soooooo original. I'm now no longer having one!

There are things that tend to be popular on the boards and I'm not sure if I feel they are done a lot because I see them here, or if they are known as popular in regular life, if you get what I mean?

Totally agree! On the sweetie table thing - I'd never seen one before hence thinking they were so original. Life is all about fads and trends and it's very difficult to escape. Even a wedding without buying into these things will still look dated in years to come. The styles of dresses (bet no one wears strapless in 10 years!) and traditional wedding cakes will look different in 10 years so you may as well go with whatever you will enjoy having/wearing/eating on the day and to hell with worrying if its a fad or not! We are doing a DIY photo booth and I cannot wait to see the photos. In my mind these are replacing the last fad of putting disposable cameras on the tables!

    Married on 7th July 2012!

It depends if you're having your wedding the way you are because YOU want it that way or if you're trying to please/impress others.  Who cares what other people think?  You should have what YOU want, how YOU want it.  Faddy or not, go with what will enhance your day for you and hubby.  People will have a good time regardless.

  • Re: Does anyone worry about having wedding "fads"?

agree - I hate following the norm - but as the wedding plans have developed we seem to be having a pretty traditional wedding! Its weird but we (as in me, oh and immediate family) have just got so caught up in it

I also didnt want a cup cake tower because 'everyone' was doing it - but now we're having one because my friends doing it and she makes great cup cakes!

the great thing about this site is that you get so many different ideas, some are fads and some are original, and then they become fads! at the end of the day its pulling all those bits together to make it something that suits you - and is within your budget Big Smile

Totally with you! I've stayed away from the photobooths/sweeties tables etc because I felt they weren't 'me' 'us'. Some of the ideas I see on here are absolutley fantastic but I want to stay true to myself.

The only thing I've swayed on due to hitched (I think) is a VOG...

Some of the ideas I've picked up from hitched are great and have enhanced my own though. I'd never have thought of silk flowers for example or found vistaprint!!

People are perfectly capable of having a lovely time without xyz - that's always been true and always will be. However you're only going to do this once hopefully so just go with what you want. Remember most of your guests don't go to many weddings from one year to the next, so what may look unoriginal and obvious to you will probably be new to them. If you like it, and you think your guests will like it, and you can afford it, then do it.

That said I think there's a limit to the number of potentially 'faddy' things I'd combine into a single day. Lots of them all together might look a bit gimicky.

  • Re: Does anyone worry about having wedding "fads"?

I think the majority of faddy things will still be original to your guests - unless theyve recently planned a wedding themselves or they go to a lot of weddings. I had never heard of most of the things like cupcake towers, sweetie tables, ice cream carts so im sure the majority of my guests havent either. The only faddy thing I really want is an ice cream cart but i dont think we can afford it!

  • Re: Does anyone worry about having wedding "fads"?

I don't worry about hvaing any gimmicks, because I am not really aware of wedding 'fads', this is the only wedding site I go on (except martha stewart, and that is for making my seating plan and nowt else.) If we have accidentally chosen something 'faddy' then so be it, we are picking stuff we like and not deliberately trying to play into anything we have seen before at weddings we have been guests at. I would love a photo booth because I know my friends would have such a laugh, but it's too much so we are putting out cheapo cameras instead and we will get just as funny pictures!

Totally understand! I hate fads, but I keep getting sucked into the wonderful world of wedding blogs and ended up with quite a few of these trends in my original thoughts for the day. The great thing about my partner not being into wedding sites or magazines is that he knows when something's actually "us" or when I've assumed it's "us" because it's popular. So, however annoyed I get when he pooh-poohs my ideas, I know he's doing it for the right reasons and helping us create something that's truly unique :)

Something only ever becomes a 'fad' because it's a popular idea.  Every wedding is as individual as the couple, so whether you have something like a photobooth, or a VOG, or a sweetie table or a chocolate fountain, or whatever that is considered a 'fad', unless your guests have a habit of frequenting weddings, then chances are the only person that is going to know about the fad is you.

Even colours are faddy.  I *think* last year was all about the Sage Green, or cadbury's purple!  I lost count of the number of brides to be who were discussing having these as their bridesmaid dresses, or their theme colour.

My opinion?  If you like it and can afford it, then have it.  Whether its a fad or not!

Exactly what The Nutty One has said - sweetie table really stood out to me as 'everyone and their mum has one!' and it isn't really us anyway and again Hitched has definitely swayed me into a VOG

I discovered foam flowers and Vistaprint here too!

    Absolutely right, RKB.

I went to 2 weddings last year, both had Cadbury's purple and every single wedding fayre I've been to this year has has the display colour around Cadbury's purple.  It's my favourite colour and I love it but I didn't choose it, not because it was popular with thoer weddings but because it clashes with my H2B's beret!! Huh?
