  • BFers and working a ?

I'm thinking about when I return to work at the end of April. L is still bf'd mainly with the odd bottle of EBM or formula and is now starting solids. I want to keep bfing and am prepared to express when I return to work but is it practical? Will it effect my supply? Do they have to provide an area where I can do it? My Head has offered her office but I envisage kids bursting in as she has quite an open door policy.

I don't want to effect my supply and my CM has said I can pop round on my lunch hour to bf him there but I'd rather not as I don't want to upset him when I leave (or me) and because the more work I can get done at lunchtime the earlier I can leave!

ANyone done this or thinking of doing it?

It's not law for them to have to provide you with somewhere private to express from what I've read up on. Is her door lockable or could it be made so with a chain (high up so it can't be reached by small hands!)?

Here's a link with some info which may be useful: http://www.hse.gov.uk/mothers/law.htm

And specific about breastfeeding in the FAQ's - http://www.hse.gov.uk/mothers/faqs.htm

Thanks. Not lockable but I could barracade myself in. She does when she has angry parents to deal with!!

I kept feeding N after I returned to work, however I only did a morning and nightime b/f feed, I managed this from 9 months to 20 months when I stopped altogether, I didn't want to have to pump when at work and N was happy to have formula at this stage, I loved the evening feed together as we both got to spend time together and relax.  Supply was fine doing this.

Following both of my returns to work I expressed (at first) twice a day in the first aid room at work. My supply was fine and only started to reduce a bit when night time feeds lessened. When both turned 1 I introduced cows milk during the day when I wasn't there and kept BFing to night time and days off.

Emsie - on my 2 days at work, I expressed in one of pour offices, just pulled the door up and pulled the blind. I had a couple of colleagues walk in but I think they were more embarrassed than me! My supply was fine, and I stopped expressing at work within a couple of months, as he wasn't really taking a bottle at nursery by then (went back when he was 8.5 months, think I stopped expressing around 11.5 months). Only thing is even now I do find I get very full and occasionally leak if I am at work very late, like when we have a governors' meeting at 5.30 and I don't come home in between.
