  • Speech at 15 months?

I know I'm probably worrying over nothing but O mostly says Mama and Dada, nothing else. He will make noises, like roaring at me but having seen other people's posts on the Net, their little ones are saying more words.

Should I be concerned or is it 'he'll do it when he wants to' iyswim?

Boys always speak later. As long as he isn't too frustrated he should catch up when he's ready. Talk to your HV if you're worried x

At 15 months I wouldn't worry at all. Es friends are such a mix at 18-24 months, some say a few words, some say a few sentences and others say nothing at all. He's fine and he will start when he is ready lovely x

  • Re: Speech at 15 months?

R is coming up to 2.5yrs and only now is he using more words, for me I don't think I would be too worried.  R has always had a good understanding, he is just not in any rush to speak.

There are 14 (7 girls/ 7 boys) children in his class at nursery, all the same age and it is split 50/50 between those talking and those not.

Jacob is 19 months and doesn't say very much yet, we have a few words - mama, dada, gaga for Grandad, ga for car and tickle - but I'm not worried. His understanding is excellent and he can follow two part instructions such as fetch a nappy and lay down, and I'm sure his speech will come in time. With a 4 year old who talks the hind legs off a donkey, I can wait for Jacob to join in!

Sawyer is 18.5 months and, like Margot's Jacob, can understand instructions clearly (though often ignores me anyway!) but doesn't say much at all really.

Something I have found lately though, is that he IS saying words, it's just that we haven't been understanding what he meant because his pronouncition was off iyswim. So recently it suddenly occurred to me that he has been saying Grandma for months, but because he says 'Agma' at the moment, I didn't realise what he was saying.

Suddenly lately he has started babling for England and every so often another 'was that a....' word comes out.

As long as LO understands, that's the main thing and I wouldn't worry x

C couldn't say much at all before 2yo, mama, dada, few animal noises and that's about it.  Within a couple of months of turning 2 he was talking in short 3-4 word sentences, and now at 2y9m, he doesn't shut up! (e.g. he's just this minute said "I can have some more breakfast if I eat that breakfast" - he likes his breakfast!)  He's pretty much on par with a friend the same age who started talking much earlier, so they all seem to catch up and he did have very good understanding from 16-18 months though, just no words. x

I would speak to your health visitor just to put your mind at rest. I spoke to mine a few months before Morgan started nursery as he hardly said anything clearly, be careful what you wish for, he never shuts up now.

Funnily enough he was also slow with his reading and writing, he was in juniors before it kicked in. But i'm now the proud mother of Youngest House Captain at his secondary school, a Lead Learner who gets to go to other schools and Uni's to give advice and the winner of a National ICT Award....

SORRY for hijacking the post, but I'm a very proud mommyBig Smile

Thanks for all the replies, it has been reassuring. O was shouting mama at me this morning and he will get it all with time x

I know you have had some excellent replies but just wanted to say at this stage it is mostly about increasing comprehension and babbling to include themselves in conversations. Do they understand you? etc Then by two they are expected to be able to put two words together. B could say loads at this age, U can make sounds like rah!

At 14 months J says mama and dada but everything else is down to us knowing what his words are to things IFSWIM? Like mandma for grandma and mandad for grandad. We only know he is saying that cos he looks directly at those people when he says it. He also babbles constantly and laughs at what he says - goodness knows what it is but it's obviously funny! From what I have read an early speaker will start putting 2 words together after 18 months so I'm not worrying yet

My newphew who is 19 months only says the odd 'dada'. But my other nephew at 20 months has quite a vocabulary. I wouldnt worry, they all learn at their own pace, and your LO may be more advanced in things others arent.
