Luke's ENT review today

Luke's ENT review at Bristol today. 16 weeks post decannulation (when they took his breathing tube out of his neck) and the stoma (hole) is still very much open. Surgeon agreed that it needs a surgery to close. Expect the date to be in about 6 weeks. We were also told to expect for him to need to go to PICU (intensive Care) after theatre for about 24 hrs (?) on the vent (life support under sedation) to allow the site to heal- said he's had cases where children with a good cough reflex wake and the first cough can cause the stitches to open. pleased that there is a plan foward but not looking forward to him being back on the vent, even if it is for a short time. the doctor said that he's done really well, we just need to make him waterproof now!

Carole, you must be so pleased with how far he's come :)  i dont often post but do look forward to updates on how Luke's doing.  Will be thinking of you all in a few weeks - and 24hrs is nothing compared to what he's had before :) x

I always follow your gorgeous boy's progress..so will be thinking of you when it's operation time. 

Sounds promising over all, although more worry for you whilst he's under and then in PICU. He's come such a long way brave little man x

Great that the doctor think he's done so well.  It must feel like 2 steps forward, 1 step back, but he's gettiing there and doing so well.  Do keep us posted.

great news that the doctor thinks he's doing so well. Sounds like there is light at the end of the tunnell. you have 1 brave little boy there.

Pleased they have a plan in place. Must be hard to think of him on vent again but at least you know it's only for a short while. Another step closer to total freedom for him!
