  • Weaning from bfing formula or cows milk?

Isabella is just over 10 months old and as I want to attempt to start weaning her off bfing should I offer formula or cows milk?

I am happy that she eats enough dairy through cheese and yoghurts and enough generally so not worried about the lack of calories formula offers compared to cows milk.

She should be on formula until 12 months really, it's not about calories but iron and vitamins which cow's milk doesn't have sufficient amounts of for them at less than 12 months.

I bf L till 14 months, at about 10/11 months he had bfs if I was there and ebm if I was at work and at 12 months he just went onto cows milk, I didn't see the point in buying formula for a couple of months when I was going to change again at 12 months iyswim. He had been having cows milk in cereal from 6 months. Xc

As Margot says, cows milk doesn't really have the iron and other nutrients in it that she'll still need for the next couple of months so it's not ideal as a main drink just yet. My only reservation with follow on formulas is that I'm told they're very sweet so it's not easy to wean children off them once they're used to them. Would you be happy expressing and giving her EBM until she reaches a year old?

I started slowly moving Sawyer from follow-on milk to cows milk between 11 and 12 months, so that he was solely on cows milk come 12 months. At this point he was eating 3 meals a day plus snacks, and had a fairly varied diet.

If I'm honest next time round if my child eats as well as Sawyer did I would be inclined to start that process a little earlier, although as Margot says guidelines are to wait until 1 year.

K had a pack of formula to see him through until 12 months. I'm sure nothing earth shattering would have happened if we'd gone straight to cows milk but it was easy enough to do formula for a bit. If she were 11 months I'd say it's not worth bothering with formula but 10 months is that little bit further away. It depends on how much they drink too - K was a total milk monster. And if it's true that formula is sweeter, that might be better to tempt her off the boob, then you can easily mix it gradually with cows' milk.
