This is why people should have hard wired alarms not battery operated then they won't fail and even go off if the elec cuts out just in case!

We have these ones. I'm glad your friends had theirs working

When I moved out of home, I insisted the council change my smoke alarms to hard wired ones. Trying to get my Mum to get them, as hers keep beeping, and so she takes the battery out. As she's a smoker, who also smokes in bed, I can't bare the thought of anything happening. Especially as she call fall asleep on a clothes line. Sad

So glad they got out. The alternative is a horrendous thought.

We got a new one this week, will check the others.

I am so glad they are all ok.

I did not know that about shutting all the doors, thanks for mentioning it.

    Bambi I live in Kent.

How do the mains ones connected? We have one at the bottom of the stairs, in the hallway and one at the top of the stairs. I can't see how they'd be connected to the mains.

How awful but glad they all got out.

My H is a fireman and they go around doing home safety checks where they check people's smoke alarms and put up new ones if they need/havent got them.  If you need new ones you can just ring the fire station and they will come and put new ones up.

I'm always closing the doors before bed aswell.

We have two mains powered ones and I just tested them both - thanks for the reminder.

I'm another one who shuts all doors before bedtime. It's a really good habit to get in to. In our old house everything was open plan and it used to really play on my mind that I couldn't shut any doors between downstairs and upstairs.

I want to ask my local fire station to send someone out for an opinion on ours. We rent, and there's one smoke alarm but it's in a weird place halfway up the stairs. That's the only one, I'm sure we need others. In our old house there was one in the hall and one in the kitchen which used to go off every time I made toast. Bit of a pain but I felt safer knowing they at least worked!

Does anyone know if the fire station can compel the landlords to fit more fire alarms for us?
