  • VBACs after multiple cesareans?

Has anyone gone on to have a VBAC after more than one cesarean?  I have had two cesareans now and at my booking in appointment with the midwife yesterday she said that the hospital are likely to push for me to have another cesarean and would be very reluctant to allow me a VBAC.  Anyone had any experiences?  I will be meeting the consultant at 16 weeks to discuss my care plan and I'd like to go in there fully researched!

sorry, I don't know much about it but my SIL had a c section, the doc then pushed for a 2nd c section and then wouldn't let her attempt a vbac with her 3rd

  • Re: VBACs after multiple cesareans?

What were reasons for previous c-sections? That may have bearing on decision? x

I was going for a VBAC for my second and at a hospital appt I met a mum who had 2 previous c-sections and was refusing a planned c-section.  I think they were going to only let her go a few days over but I think it helped her H was a doctor at the hospital.  I remember us both wishing each other luck we managed to go into labour before the consultants decided a c-section was the way to go.  I didn't see her again so I don't know what happened but she did get them  to at least consider it.l

The hospital I went to have a policy of after 2 c-sections, vbac is ruled out, they made it clear to me that if I had a 2nd section, then I wouldn't get a vbac chance, a 3rd pregnancy would be an automatic section.

  • Re: VBACs after multiple cesareans?

Thanks for your replies!  My first was an emergency section due to Charlie getting stuck in the birthing canal and they couldn't get him out with ventouse or forceps!

With Tommy, I had very high blood pressure and plus I went into labour at 26 weeks (they stopped it though) and plus he was measuring really big.  They told me at 30 weeks it was a definate section because of those reasons and when I went in for a growth scan at 32 weeks he was breach and there was no room for him to turn so it would have been a section anyway.

I desperately want to have a natural birth...

One of the issues is that they can't see what is going on in side.

I have had 3 sections.  After my 3rd the consultant told me that it was fortunate that my son was born when he was and that he was small as my scar was very thin and could have ruptured at any time. I have basically been told to have no more.

Do discuss it with the consultant but i think they generally have to err on the side of caution.

    Good luck!

I have had 2 c sections and am currently pregnant with my 3rd. My consultant has already discussed another c section with me (I am happy to have one) but has said if I want to discuss a VBAC later then we can have that discussion too.

I know MrsJMP has had 2 c sections followed by a VBAC

I had a vbac after only one section and too was told they would be very unlikely to let me try to have a go after two sections. There is lots of stuff out there about women who have done it though - there is an American midwife called Ina May Gaskin, I am pretty sure you would find mention of it in her books/websites. They are a bit 'out there' but I found the one I read really inspiring.

I have had two emergency sections (went for vbac second time) I have been told vbac is not an option if I do go for a third. I think I had lots of scar tissue though and did lose some blood on the second one so had a blood transfusion.

I was desperate for a vbac but if I am honest they seemed desperate to give me an emergency section.  If you don't progress quickly then they don't seem happy to leave you too long (in my hospital in surrey).   Maybe they don't like the extra monitoring with a vbac.  Who knows but I did 20 hours the second time to end up with an e-section.  I got to 9cms and wouldn't go any further.  I think it was correct I had the section but I was gutted not to get my vbac.  Good luck.

I had 2 c-sections and wanted a v-bac for my third. I saw a lovely consultant midwife who was really supportive, the risk of scar rupture is really very very small.  See if your hospital or area has someone like this? She covered a few hospitals in South Wales, not just mine.

Unfortunately in the end, I had my third c-section at 15 days overdue - by that stage I really didn't care how the baby got out!

Good luck with it all, I was surprised by the relaxed attitude of all the medical people I saw, I think it's becoming a lot more common now so they don't feel like we're asking for something unusual/risky.

  • Re: VBACs after multiple cesareans?

there is a good group on yahoo which i think i linked to on the wiki about vbac

they have a lot of experience and can supply information you need to push it forwards which ever way you choose.

  • Re: VBACs after multiple cesareans?

I was told when pregnant with J that if I chose to have a second section then if I had any more children later they would have to be sections too and that I shouldnt have a section if I planned to have more than one other child? TBH I dont know if this was the unsupportive consultant that I saw when mine was sick as she was pretty much pushing for me to have a VBAC with J which I didnt want. I think it depends very much on the team you have unfortunately.

Sorry can I be nosey and ask why you really want a natural delivery? I know it's not an odd thing but just checking that it isnt because you feel like you're 'missing out' on something - honestly you're not! I get why you'd think that but as someone who has done both I can say hand on heart that it didnt bother me having sections with the second and third after my awful natural delivery. The only thing that would possibly put me off a third section is the recovery with the two I have.
