  • I feel so guilty...

I was temping at work for 3 months and last week they offered me a permanent position and i accepted. I obviousy didn't tell them i was pg and now i feel so guilty Tongue Tied

I guess they can't sack me if i do tell them but i feel like i've lied to them and i can't bear lying. I won't be eligible for maternity pay from them as i haven't been there long enough. Sorry just needed to vent!

If you told them now to ease your guilt - they can't take the position away from you. You don't need to tell your employer until you are 25 weeks anyway. I wouldn't feel too guilty about it.

Please don't feel guilty. If they have offered you a permanent position then its because your deserve it.

I am not sure what the rules are with probationary periods and pregnancy so if you are on one you might just want to check to be on the safe side.

BTW I told my employers fairly early on that I was pregnant and the  a job that had all but been promised to me went to another person. Whilst I can't prove anything it made me realise that even in the large companies where they are known for being fair to employees they still think of themselves!

  • Re: I feel so guilty...

it is actually illegal to not offer someone a job on the basis of being pregnant if they are the best person for the job so you haven't led them on at all - you were obviously the best person for the job so they would have had to offer it to you anyway!

Well firstly congratulations on your new job!

Secondly, WEES. I understand why you feel a bit guilty but they obviously thought you were too good to let go. When do you start properly? Can you wait until you've signed your contract before telling them?

Also, you might still be entitled to their company maternity leave/SMP, I think provided you have worked for your employer for 26 weeks by the 15th week before the baby is due you get it, my maths isn't good at the moment - but you might just about cut it?

It's natural to feel guilty but you haven't done anything wrong, just remember that.

    Congratulations!

it is normal to feel guilty but shouldnt have to, yes by law you dont have to tell them yet but if you are too stressed about it then just tell them, they would be in trouble if they got the job away because of it.

If you re not entitled to their ML you may well be able to have maternity allowance, have a look on the gov website
