I have finally given in and got a facebook account and am intending to just limit it to people I actually know/want to keep in touch with rather than random people I knew at school/uni etc that I have lost touch with. But it's quite strange to look through people's friends lists and see names and faces f people I used to spend time with - it has stirred up so many memories, some good, some bad and I am now quite tempted to get back in touch with people I haven't thought about in years - probably out of nosiness rather than anything.

Does anyone else find this with facebook? And did you manage to limit who you added as a friend? I worry endlessly about upsetting people so imagine I will find it hard to ignore friend requests if and when they come through from people from my past.

Facebook made me miserable. I ended up constantly comparing myself to people from my youth & finding myself wanting. In the end, I deactivated my account. Interestingly, none of my 'friends' noticed I'd gone, so I obviously wasn't that crucial a part of the community!

I'm very tempted to shut my facebook account, I don't like the way one person can comment on a photograph and then open it up to strangers who don't even know you (I also nosey at other people's photographs so i'm just as bad).  I also don't like the way people use it as a tool to get at others and show off.  I will miss the games though, which is what's put me off closing it, anyone know where else I can play bejewelled blitz? You could buy the full Bejeweled game. I have the deluxe edition and it's great.

but would I want to play as much if I knew I wasn't doing it to beat someone else's score?

I do like it but I find it infuriating sometimes - some people are so unsufferable on there. normally people I 'have' to be friends with - relations etc.

sometimes it drives me mad, but better since I learned you can 'turn down' some people's updates - phew!

I find the security of photos bad too.

I love Facebook and have had no problems with it whatsoever.  I love the fact that I've got back in touch with people from years ago and agree with you about the stirring of memories etc.

I agree with MrsB about the security of photos though.  As soon as you tag someone or one of your friends tags one of their friends who you are not friends with IYSWIM, then your album becomes public, don't know how to get round that one.

You can set your photos to be viewed only by friends rather than friends of friends or whatever.

Doesn't work Zebra. See this thread from last week. I'm still waiting for a response from Facebook regarding this.

I’ve been thinking lately about deactivating my facebook account.  I check it far too often and for what reason?......to see the latest boastings from people I haven’t seen for x years.

I find myself getting too easily wound up by things on facebook.  Within my ‘friends’ list there seems to be some sort of popularity competition going on and I do often end up feeling like I’m ‘not keeping up’ or my life isn’t exciting enough.  Which is ridiculous.  It’s really scary how much facebook is like being back at school – even though we all left 10 years ago!

I do really enjoy looking at friends photos etc so I know I will find it difficult to keep away if I deactivate.  Plus we all like to be nosey now and again! But I have realised lately that it seems to doing more harm than good.  Maybe I just won't log on as much! (she says!)

  • Re: Does anyone find using Facebook unsettling?

In general I like it and I've got back in touch with a few people from college/school there. I have pretty much the highest security level possible - only friends of friends can find me and as Zebra says, you can set your photos to be seen by friends only (I do this). I've had some nobbers from school try and add me, but I just ignore them. Fundamentally I'm a very nosy person who wants to know what happened to everyone from school/college!

It's more difficult when a colleague you don't like or want to be associated with, but whom you see regularly, tries to add you. It would be obvious, and this person is gauche enough to bring it up when I see him - any suggestions?

Is that the case? Even if you've chosen to make it only viewable to friends? I did not know that.

Interesting - is this the case even with albums with the setting "Only Friends", rather than when you've just set photos in general to be viewable only by friends? I've noticed that the default setting for albums seems to be "everyone", you have to change it manually. If you've done that too, that's pretty bad!

Yes. All of my albums are set to only friends and I also have the photo application settings in the main settings box set to only friends, yet the fake bloke I mentioned in the other thread was still able to view all of my albums where someone he was friends with was tagged in one or more photo in the album.

Wow, that is some bug! I'd be interested to hear what their response is.
