  • My Mum has a question for you lovely Hitchers????

My mum had her hair done yesterday for the wedding and a small trial. To see how her hair would look, any how the lady said to her about wedding ettique (sorry on spelling)

She explained to my Mum that, people don't start eating there meal until the mother of the bride takes her hat off!

Now, I have never seen or heard of this before.  But surely, the top table gets served 1st obviously then the following tables.  Which mean people eat as they get it. There are 6 tables so with soup you are not going to wait till the last table has been served because yours will be cold.

I think the hairdresser, is talking Bo**ocks, but I could be wrong! But my mum wants to make sure, so she does it right.  She is panicing other everything now, for my sake.  Which I have told her not to, Sunday she had a major panic attack.  The last one she had was when my nan passed away which was 11 years and she ended up in hospital.

But is it pollite for my mum to take her hat off anyway or leave it on.

    TIA

No thats not it - tradition dictates that no guests TAKE THEIR HAT OFF until MoB takes hers off...

    Talk about chinese whispers!

Sorry in answer to your other question... its up to her when she takes it off really.  I'm sure there will be pictures of the speeches so if she wants her had on for that should keep it on but perhaps would want to take it off before incase people don't want to eat with hats on?

That said however not many people stick to the tradition of waiting for the MoB to take hers off first.

If she does take it off make sure she has time to 'repair' any hat hair damage!

Thanks LL, that's brilliant.  I thought it was wrong, as you say if people don't want to eat with there hat on then they don't.  Will let my mum know at lunch, one less thing for her to worry about.

Hiya at both of my daughters' weddings I kept my hat on until after the meal, which was what the lady who I hired the lst one from said to do.  Apparently no-one should remove their headgear until after the MOB has removed hers.  At the lst wedding 5 years ago the MOG kept looking at me and kept saying "Is it time yet" because she hated wearing herst but I loved doing so, so waited until the last minute - evil I know but it was fun.  At my eldest's wedding in February I did the same but had a fascinator made for evening, I must say though that at this wedding the hat was so big I did struggle to eat at times Big Smile.  I think the best thing is do what you feel comfortable with, we went to a wedding at the weekend and there was only 6 ladies that wore something on their heads, I wore my fascinator and kept it on nearly all night too.  But sadly the bride's mum had passed away so on-one could follow her example.  Tell you mum to do what she feels comfortable with and enjoy the day.

ahhhhhh now my OHs godmother said she wouldnt take hers off until she knew what my mum was doing with hers... mum kept hers on for a long time.

also the men cant take their jackets off until the groom takes his off, did you know that???? we learned that too.

Well our guests would be waiting an awful long time because my mum isn't wearing a hat!

I wouldn't worry about stuff like that, just go ahead and do whatever!

Thanks ladies, as you say some stupid things.  My mum is happy now, and says she will proberly take it off after the meal when I remove my veil.  She wants to wear it as long as poss, as she has paid alott of money for it, and wants to get her wear out of it Laugh

As of the jackets for the men, just as stupid! So the groom is a little nesh, and the day is 60 degrees outside he does not feel it, for the gentleman guests are hot and want to take of their jackets but can't.  I would just say take them off!

Oh for god's sake.  Where do all these things come from?  Traditionally, etiquette dictates that men remove their hats when indoors, but as far as I'm aware, woman can keep them on.

As others have said, who cares?  If she wants to keep it on, then keep it on, if she wants to take it off, then take it off.

    Life's too short to worry!

    What Ali said.

I don't understand this at all. If I wanted to keep my hat on but I knew someone wanted to take theirs off I would have insisted they did. I'd hate for it to ruin part of her day for keeping her hat on if she hated it!
