  • Getting a 6 month old to drink anything other than milk out of anything other than a bottle

    Basically he won't Laugh

He's mostly been FF but still has the occasionall boob.

He won't take water from a bottle (he starts but then realises what it is (or isn't!) and it comes tumbling out of his mouth. He knows what he needs to do with his cup but after getting hold of it, trying to suck and chewing on the spout for a while he then gets horridly frustrated and cries until I take him out of the highchair and settle him. This happens with water, formula and various concentrations of juice (determined not to allow juice in a bottle - am I right?).

The best compromise we have reached isa small amount of watered down formula out of a bottle. Just worried in this heat about him being properly hydrated.

He gets 2 meals a day, a snack in the evening, mixture of purees and BLW and I try to get him to drink a small amount for each of these.

    Is it just too early?

I have a doidy cup but haven't tried it yet as I'm pretty sure he isn't coordinated enough for it.

    Any tips?

    TIA

I started trying to get Oliver to drink water when he was 6 months old, it took at least 6 weeks before he was interested.  There was a lot of chewing on the spout of the cup, or taking water in but then spitting it out in disgust.  I spoke to the HV and she said not to worry about the amount of water he is or isn't taking, just be persistent.  I stopped worrying about it and sure enough within time he learnt to love water.  He's now 10 months and just gulps it down whenever its offered.  Such a change from a few months ago.

I recommend the Tommee Tippee First Cup if you haven't already got one.

Also, things I tried whilst trying to get Oliver interested:

Vary the temperature of the water

Get him to watch me drinking from a glass and then put it to his lips (this worked as he wanted to be like me)

Tried in different bottles with different teats

Abi is the same as Firsttimemum's Aaron.  She is 11 months and drinks maybe 3 sips of water a day.  She wont drink anything other than ebm, though H did manage to get her to take about 1oz of cows milk from a bottle the other night when I was late home.

I have tried water in a sippy cup, cup with a straw, in a bottle, doidy cup.  Same with very watery dilute juice to no avail.  So frustrating, especially like you say in this heat!

Nursery have said she drinks there so I am not sure if its just because at home she knows she has boobs on tap!!

Thanks ladies. Sounds like we just have to be patient. I tried the doidy cup this morning. He seemed to know what to do with it. He grabbed it and put it to his mouth but then spilled the contents over himself before I had a chance to assist. He looked quite pleased with himself though and I think he drank a tiny bit. Better than the crying we get with the trainer cup!
