  • Oh God - I've just given Z an out of date egg - help

I just made Z an egg mayo sandwich for his tea which he has wolfed down.

I went back to the fridge to get him a yoghurt and noticed the box of eggs that I bought at the weekend - not the box that I had just used an egg from. I must have left an old box in the fridge. I just checked the box and the BB date was 18th June!

I can't believe I've done this - am so upset with myself. If it was anything else I wouldn't worry so much - but eggs are dodgy aren't they?

It looked and smelt fine - and obv tasted ok as he ate the whole lot.

Will he be ok? Is there anything I should do?

    I'm so stupid

I'm sure if it smelt and tasted ok it should be fine as you say eggs are one of those things that sometimes last forever (or so it seems) and sometimes go off after a few days

Don't feel bad it's not as though you did it on purpose Hug

He'll be fine. I imagine the eggs are lion stamped so they should be salmonella free, plus if it was cooked, and looked and smelt OK, it would have been fine. Eggs last much longer than the sell by dates on the box.

If it looked ok and smelt ok I wouldn't worry too much. You can tell when eggs have gone off, usually! As my nana scathingly told me the other week, "Eggs never used to have use by dates. You just cracked em and had a smell!"

    It's easy done!Kiss

I would think it would probably be OK to be honest. If it smelt fine I would think you'd be OK. Try not to panic, just keep an eye. Do you have any more from the same date? If so, put one in a bowl of water, if it doesn't float, it's fine.

If it had been off you would have known as soon as you cracked it open.  Eggs are often used in this house a month after their BB date as we don't eat that many.  He will be fine, try not to worry.

Thanks all, you've put my mind at rest. It definitely didn't float when I boiled it. Have thrown the others out now!

    Thanks again

You'd have known if it was off, the smell is unmistakeable and best before dates are a totally artificial thing

We keep chickens so our eggs don't have BBDs and we just check with smell or if we have a lot and I've messed up the order we use them in then seeing if they float - eggs keep forever

  • Re: Oh God - I've just given Z an out of date egg - help

I don't think I ever look at dates tbh.  If it floats it gets thrown, if it smells awful and just doesn't look right after it's been open it gets thrown.

I don't look at the dates either and I've only ever had one nasty one.  General rule is (or at least used to be) that they'd last for 100 days out of the fridge and longer in it.

  • Re: Oh God - I've just given Z an out of date egg - help

I never knew that! I'm pretty relaxed about dates normally but I thought eggs were quite dodgy. I really won't worry anymore then!

    Thanks

If you can get near the egg once it's cracked it's fine.

If it's got salmonella, it's got salmonella whether it's fresh out of the chicken or in the fridge for 10 weeks.
