Sir Ian McKellen 'will never wed'

Lord of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellen has claimed that the chances of him finding himself in the throes of wedding planning some day are slim.

The 70-year-old revealed that even though same sex marriages are legal in Britain, tying the knot has never crossed his mind.

He put this down to the fact that the prospect of a gay man settling down with a husband and having kids was once unheard of.

Speaking to Details magazine, he explained: "That's the scar that I and so many others bear - we believed ourselves to be second-rate citizens … the idea of being able to say, 'This is my husband, these are my children,' was not an option."

The actor, who appears both in movies and on the stage, was once in a relationship with director Sean Mathias.

However, they split back in 1988, long before the idea of two gay men cutting a wedding cake together was acceptable in the UK.
