Ickford couple celebrate 70th anniversary

An Ickford couple received a card from the Queen this week congratulating them on their 70 years of marriage.
Edward and Marie Jenkinson, 100 and 94 respectively, celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary with a three-course-meal at a local restaurant, where they recalled their life together.
Just days after cutting their
wedding cake in 1939, World War II broke out and the pair's
honeymoon in Dartmouth was cut short.
Marie worked as a primary school teacher while Edward took a job as a firefighter in London during the war, the Oxford Mail reports.
He commented: "It wasn't the smoothest start to married life. We didn't have the slightest chance to get used to being together."
Despite the obstacles, the pair remained together and have been solid throughout their marriage.
Meanwhile, a couple from Croydon who celebrated their 70th anniversary back in July - Edith and Henry Weston - told the Croydon Advertiser that the key to a long-lasting marriage is looking after each other through thick and thin.
