Fernando Torres and partner wed in a low-key ceremony

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres proved that footballers and their partners do not need over-the-top lavish weddings to confirm their love.

The Spanish-born star tied the knot with his girlfriend of eight years Olalla Dominguez in a low-key ceremony this week.

In a far cry from the usual multi-million pound nuptials celebrated by fellow footballers Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole and David Beckham - and their respective wags - Fernando and Olalla chose the town hall of tiny El Escorial, north of Madrid, as their wedding venue.

Rather than sending out wedding invitations to hundreds of A-listers that neither of them really knows, the pair were accompanied by two guests.

"It was hardly a ceremony fit for a superstar. It was small and romantic, but there was nothing glam about the day at all," a source told the Mirror.

In a return to the normal behaviour of footballers and their glitz-obsessed fianees, Rio Ferdinand is not likely to disappoint in the lavish wedding stakes when he and his partner tie the knot in a Cheshire castle this August.
