MP weds in civil ceremony

British MP Angela Eagle married her long-term partner at the weekend in a civil partnership ceremony in south London, reports state.

The 47-year-old Treasury minister celebrated her union with partner of 18 years Maria Exall on Saturday, making her the first female MP to enter a civil partnership.

Among close friends and family, the couple exchanged vows at Southwark Register Offices before attending a reception at a south London wedding venue.

"It's been great, everyone was very pleased and they are very much in love," Ms Eagle's sister commented.

Angela was very much involved in bringing in the Civil Partnerships Act of 2004, which legalised civil partnerships in Britain from 2005.

Previously commenting on their wedding planning, Ms Eagle said: "We are both delighted to be taking advantage of legislation brought in by the Labour government that recognises same sex relationships."

Labour health minister Ben Bradshaw was the first MP to hold a civil partnership ceremony in 2006.
