Is a wedding party of 200 just too much?
When a couple decide to get married, their thoughts immediately veer towards the big day and wedding planning. The ceremony: a symbolic and often religious act aimed at sealing the marriage deal, and the reception: the best excuse for a knees-up to celebrate the occasion. But, when a bride and groom manage to organise their big day with an additional agenda, that is when things get really interesting.
We have heard of the Star Wars-themed wedding and most recently, a Shrek-inspired celebration. There was even once a man who married a pineapple in Gretna Green - just for the hell of it. Now, Glenn Wilson and his bride-to-be Angelica are planning something out of this world for their big day - they intend to break the world record for the number of bridesmaids and best men taking part in the wedding.
But, this is not simply a wedding gimmick - like the Jordan-obsessed girl whose wedding dress weighed a massive 25 stone - rather these two are hoping to raise enough money to bring them closer to fully registering their charity A Glimmer of Hope.
Glenn,55, and Angelica, 41, who both live in Blackpool, intend to have 100 bridesmaids and 100 best men, which is sure to beat the current record of 92. The numbers will be made up by friends and family, including the couple's collective eight children, whom they each had with former partners.
Psychologist Glenn explained to the Liverpool Echo: "In the beginning there were going to be 23 bridesmaids. As we were counting them up, Angelica thought it would be great to get everyone involved and attempt a new world record for our charity."
Although my first thought would be "how will they be able to afford to clothe a wedding party of 200?", I suppose where there's a will there's a way. Besides, if this wedding extravaganza is in any way going to benefit a charity that supports people with mental illness, it gets my vote. And I am pretty sure that the atmosphere will be electric, guaranteeing Glenn and Angelica the best day of their lives.
Is this the craziest thing you have ever heard of, or have you been to an even wackier wedding?
