Booking the honeymoon? Do tell the bride

When my husband puts his mind to it, there’s no-one who can beat him at arranging surprises – for my 30^th birthday, he secretly planned a narrowboat holiday in Somerset involving nearly a dozen people without me suspecting a thing, right down to blindfolding me as we drove up.

But if I’d left our honeymoon plans to him, I seriously doubt we’d have ended up exploring Brazil for a fortnight as tropical rainforests aren't top of his list (although, needless to say, he had a great time!).

It might be traditional for the groom to arrange the honeymoon, whether he keeps it a surprise for the bride or not. But a new survey for hitched.co.uk found that just 1.5% of grooms are left to sort it out solo these days.

Even after input from their wives, only 11% of men go on to make the booking alone - almost exactly the same number of brides who take charge following initial honeymoon discussions with their husbands-to-be.

Like most aspects of marriage these days, it’s a team effort with 74% of couples arranging the first getaway as newlyweds together.

After all, can you imagine the thought of a blow-the-budget trip which one partner has dreamed of for years – and the other one can’t stand the thought of? It’s not exactly the once-in-a-lifetime romantic experience you want to have.

As ever, the key is compromise.

The most common honeymoon planning disagreement occurs when one of you wants a beach break and the other one wants a city adventure - so try a two-centre destination where you get chance to explore before relaxing on the sand.

Or combine both aspects in one fabulous holiday. For example, the beaches in Rio de Janeiro and Sydney are famous worldwide, but there’s plenty to do away from the water.

And Cape Town has beach and city attractions, as well as the winelands on its doorstep for vineyard visits - but you needn't even leave Europe, with sensational sand and city breaks on offer in Barcelona and Lisbon too.

Sandals' New Spice Island Resort

There are certain phrases which conjure up the excitement and exoticism of travel for me – and “spice island” is high up my list. Say the words and I can practically feel the sun on my skin, breezes perfumed with nutmeg and cinnamon blowing across white sand palm-fringed beaches.

All of which sounds pretty good for a romantic getaway too. So it’s great news for newlyweds that honeymoon specialists Sandals are opening a new resort on Grenada where you can visit spice plantations as well as discovering the famous Grand Anse Beach, voted one of the best in the world, and explore lush rainforests.

Set on 17 acres along unspoiled Pink Gin Beach, The Sandals LaSource Grenada Resort & Spa (on the site of the former LaSource spa and wellness resort) will open on December 12^th 2013, but is already accepting bookings.

Along with its luxurious spa, there are nine different options for dining including sushi and Caribbean cuisine in the resort’s three “villages” – Pink Gin, Italian and Tahiti.

Pink Gin is beachside, with a new infinity pool, while the Italian village has two river pools and is set on a clifftop. Tahiti village is on the resort’s mountainside with luxurious suites including their own pool and extra privacy.

Tempting though it might be to stay in the resort, the compact island has plenty to discover too. It would practically be a crime not to dip a toe into the clear waters and discover the corals and tropical fish, whether you’d prefer to snorkel or want to try a scuba dive. There’s even an underwater sculpture gallery, which you can also view from clear-bottomed boats.

And the pastel houses and old stone churches of the capital, St George’s, make it one of the prettiest towns in the Caribbean.

It’s not just spices that grow on the island either – there’s plenty of cocoa. And that means you can enjoy hand-made chocolates with a rum-based cocktail or two. Tempted yet? I know I am.

Six of the best: honeymoon packing essentials

I do like to pack for every eventuality (assuming my suitcase, baggage allowance and biceps can take it).

But forget your toothbrush - I've compiled a list of the top six things you absolutely cannot afford to leave at home when you’re heading off on honeymoon…

1 - Passport: forget that (or any essential visas) and the honeymoon is over before it’s even begun. Some countries insist on a passport being at least six months ahead of its expiry date, so make sure you update it in time if you haven’t already. And even if you’re planning to change your name after the ceremony, you almost certainly won’t be able to update your passport details before you fly out, so make sure the name your tickets are booked under match the name on your passport.

2 - Marriage certificate: hoping for an upgrade or a bit of special treatment? Unless the cabin crew is happy to accept your beaming grin and shiny new ring as evidence, you might need to prove that you’ve just become man and wife. Pop a copy of your marriage certificate into your hand luggage, just in case.

3 - Camera: it may be your once-in-a-lifetime holiday, but it’s still nice to have those magical moments committed to a memory card. Then you can create an album once you’re back at home and relive the experience. (Don’t forget to pack spare batteries and/or the charger too.)

4 - First aid kit: it’s not remotely romantic - but neither is a headache, an upset stomach or a 10 minute sneezing fit caused by the resort’s exotic flowers. Make sure you put some medical essentials in your suitcase, along with any prescriptions.

5 - Something gorgeous: it could be a glam new bikini; it could be a beautiful kaftan for the beach; it could even be a stunning, honeymoon-perfect lipstick shade. You needn’t buy a whole new honeymoon wardrobe, but a few gorgeous pieces will make you feel extra special as you enjoy your first holiday as newlyweds.

6 - Money, money, money: that means cash as well as credit and debit cards – especially if it’s a destination without ATMs on every corner. That way, if you’ve forgotten anything else, you won’t have to live without it.
