We started F (24 wks) on baby rice at the weekend and they haven't gone down well at all.  H thinks we should persevere.  I think we should stop, carry on BFing for a few more weeks and then attempt BLW.  H isn't convinced as purees worked well with our son, so he feels it's the tried & tested route - but he's willing to give it a whirl if I'm happy to try.  So, now I've persuaded him to try BLW - how do we start?  I've read some info on various websites etc. and am I right in thinking it's a case of simply offering chip size finger foods at mealtimes and going from there?  Any big do's and don'ts I need to be aware of?  And should all foods be well cooked so they are soft or will she happily chew on harder foods?  I want to try and make this work as I'm sure it'll be so much easier than faffing about with purees, but must admit, am a bit nervous about trying something new.

    Any advice gratefully received.

Ok, things to remember: milk is the main source of nutrition until they're a year. Don't give them solids on an empty stomach - the idea is babies don't understand food will make them full, it's just another toy. Give food the size of two fingers. You can give what you eat but adapted - less salt, things cooked so they're a little softer - but not so much that big pieces break off in their mouths iyswim? If your baby isn't interested, don't worry. The guidelines are for the middle of the first year, not exactly 6 months. Have fun!

Bookgirl - thank you for that very concise explanation.  Sounds simple enough and relatively easy.  Is the 2 finger size portion our 2 fingers or baby's?  I think I'm gong to continue BFing as usual as she appears to be thriving on it and just start offering finger foods over the next few weeks.  See how it goes.  It's got to be so much easier than cooking up mush and forcing that into her mouth when she really doesn't want it.  Do you know if there are any good websites/leaflets/books that I can read up on?  Thanks again!

There is a book by Gill Rapley which is excellent and see: http://babyledweaning.com/

Your fingers - it's so they can hold one end and put the other in their mouth. The Gill Rapley book called Baby Led Weaning is your guide - I got it on Amazon, v easy to read and very informative. Izzy really took to blw and dropped milk feeds pretty quickly, but it doesn't happen for everyone. She loves all food and actually now refuses blander foods like rice cakes and plain toast, especially if she sees us eating something else - the other day she had a strop in her high chair until I gave her some of our lamb rogan josh! (H had made it from scratch, it was delicious!)

Wow - good girl Izzy, that's a fab advertisement for BLW if ever I heard one!!

Well, our first attempt also very successful.  She happily nibbled away on some green beans, getting really frustrated when she dropped them.  She then very quickly demolished a slice of banana.  She took to it so much happier than the purees ang even H had to agree that she seemed to be enjoying it.  So, will order the book and then onwards and upwards.
