  • crying/clinginess at nursery

    Hi Everyone

My little boy has suddenly have become very clingy and cries when I leave him at nursery or when I leave him with grandparents. He is nearly 2 years old and has been attending nursery quite happily for over a year. He has been fine at nursery up until now - apart from a phase last summer when he cried when I left but was fine for the rest of the day. But now the nursery tell me that he is upset throughout the day and is very clingy with his key worker too. I am wracking my brains trying to think what might be causing this - there have been no major changes in our lives recently.... the thought of him being unhappy through the day is quite upsetting, although I am confident that he is ok when his keyworker is with him.

    Any thoughts or advice?

Oh hun that sounds horrible.  I don't have any advise but I left my little one crying at nursery this morning too the first time that has happened for about 6 months and I was an emotional wreck afterwards.  Hope someone can help,

Could be separation anixety - some can go through this again.

My LO cries when i leave him everyday, we have started to overcome this with a reward at the weekend.  Can he take a fave toy to help him through the day?  This worked with my LO for a while.

    Could also be teething?

yes that's what I thought. He did go through this before but not to the extent that he was miserable throughout the day.

We took in a fave toy yesterday but didn't seem to make much difference. Took in his milk beaker today. This is all directed by him so he obviously is keen to have a little piece of home there.

Teething - will check this out. He's only got top 2nd molars to come, the bottom ones have recently made an appearance so perhaps they are on the way. Will have to find a way to check without losing any fingers!

Hug We've just been through this too, it's horrid isn't it? Maybe it's just an age-thing, as someone else said, a little bit of separation anxiety? My LO has just beome incredibly clingy to me, doesn't want my H to do anything if you ask, but then really enjoys things once she gets past that initial 'no'.... going off topic slightly there!

Anyway, nursery seems to have settled for her. We had a week of taking in her favourite book one day, her 'baby' another day, and a Peppa magazine with loads of stickers in another day, so she had things to show to the others. This seemed to help, so maybe as you say, it's just having something familiar or that he takes great interest in around.

    Hope it passes soon.

Felix has been going to nursery for 2 years now (he's 2 1/2) and for the past two weeks has been having absolute hysterics when I leave him off....but in the evening when I come to collect him, he's really happy and excited, telling me what a fab day he's had.

I talked with the supervisor last week and we decided to try to make it better.  Our plan was:

    • Ask Felix what his favourite toys were (dinosaur story & toys)
    • Talked it up last week before he left, explaining that Laura, the supervisor would have it ready for him arriving this morning
    • Before we left the house I reminded Felix that it would be waiting for him
    • Arrived at nursery and Laura was there to immediately distract him with his fave toys.  No hysterics, YAY!

I have no idea what sets them off, but if you talk to the nursery they might be able to try something similar?
