  • Hospital Bag

I know this has been done so many times before but thought I should start thinking about what to put in my hospital bag. Please could anyone let me have a list of items I need to pack.

    Thanks

I used a few that were available online to combine and make my own.

This seems like a good one http://www.isyourbagpacked.co.uk/hospital-bag-checklist-3-w.asp

    There's a good list here:

Definitely bring bendy straws! And snacks...

  • Re: Hospital Bag

    The lists already posted are great. But if I'm honest the only things I used from my hospiatl bag were;
    big knickers
    maternity pads
    nightdress / dressing gown
    slipppers
    toiletries
energy tablets & bottle of lucozade
makeup and clothes for coming home - then it was a quick slick of lipgloss and under eye concelar

I didn't eat a thing from my bag as the midwife got my a sandwich. No time to sit and read book or make phone calls etc. However, I was only in there a little while. Admitted at 3pm and left at noon the next day.

I'm the same as KB3 - I followed the list on the link that Katy has put up for you, and took in about 3 bags!

The things I used (wasn't in very long as KB3 said) were:

    Toiletries
Big knickers and LOTS of maternity pads
    Slippers
    Pyjamas and dressing gown
Nappies, clothes, muslins etc for the baby

I took in snacks and drinks and did end up eating one of my jaffa cake bars but not because I needed it but because I'm a fatty Wink

I would say take in a magazine though for on the labour ward when you are waiting for your OH to be allowed in at visiting hours - chances are the baby will sleep for the first 24 hours and if you can't sleep you'll need something to occupy you.

I was in for 2 nights so used quite alot of what i took in (taken from the list on the btwiki) but one thing that i could have done with was a pair of birenstocks or something - even though it was snowing outside as my feet and ankes were really swollen after giving birth (which really surprised me as they hadn't been swollen at all during pregnancy but apparently fluid just colllects there after birth) and i couldn't get the trainers i'd worn to go to hopsital back on and ended up walking to the car in my slippers!

i also packed snacks for H and i am glad I did, I ended up delivery on a sunday and the shops near didnt hopen till late sunday morning and H was happy to have something to snack on

  • Re: Hospital Bag

One thing I would recommend is to pack a bag that is a labour / first night bag, and then get your H to bring in the things you need for if you are staying in.  Each morning H would bring in clean clothes for me and take home the dirty ones etc.  There isn't much space around the bed, especially if you are going to be having visitors, so less is more quite often.

The one thing I didn't have that I wished I had was some flipflops to wear in the shower.  I'm a bit of a hygiene freak and knowing there had been other bleeding women in the shower before me was a bit of a yuck moment.  Flip flops would have made me feel more comfortable.

Even if you are normally a pyjama person it's worth considering having a nightdress just incase you end up with a c-section.  There was now way I could have worn pyjamas on the first, or probably even second, night.  Also the wards are normally really hot so a lightweight dressing gown is better than a really warm one.

Apologies for lack of capital letters - Zoe has stolen my shift key Huh?

WJBS re flip flops. I went to tthe loo once and I assume someone had pulled out the shower hose to spray over their bits while they had a wee, the floor was like a lake!

we were kept in for 2 days, and I needed more snacks - I was constantly ravenous but you just got your 3 meals a day! Take at least 2 packs of maternity pads, I think I changed mine once every 2 hours at least for the first 24 hours.

don't want to scare you but during labour I hurt my throat making low noises ... I needed throat lozenges the next day so next time would pack them. Also soft snacks, as the hobnobs we had hurt my throat.

phone no of a bfc if planning to bf!!

  • Re: Hospital Bag

Best thing I packed in my bag was jaffa cakes and chocolate hobnobs, for me and my H! I didn't use anything else!

I bought myself new jamas and slippers and wish I'd used my old ones as they weren't as cosy as the ones I would normally have and I felt like a granny!

Next time around I will be taking a small jug! I had a slight graze and one stitch and someone suggested when you pee to pour water in the area at the same time to dilute the sting as it were! It definately helped!!! x

Ooo good point re the different bags and outfits in case you have to stay in! My H was in charge of bringing me in some clothes to go home in and what he brought me in didn't match! I went home feeling a right wreck. I'd maybe get a few piles of outfits lines up so he can just grab you one!

Also E was a sucky baby and had a dummy but I hadn't packed one so he had to bring one in the next day, If she'd have had it the first night I'd have got some sleep I think.

Also the position I gave birth in made me ache all over the next day so I really needed some paracetemol to get me through it! x

    And a camera!

I have no pics of me in hospital with Evie as I was taking them of my H and her, but he didn't think to take any of me. (Maybe I was too hideous looking!) x

Lip balm!  My lips were soooooo sore the next day from the G&A and I think from shouting a lot! Embarrassed

That was the only thing I used from my hospital bag whilst I was in labour.

Afterwards I used my pj's, toiletries, maternity pads, nappies, baby clothes and snacks,

OMG Starstruck you've just reminded me THROAT SWEETS! I didn't take any and my throat was so sore from screaming that I needed a packet the next morning.

Something I'm going to pack extra this time is a change of clothes for OH just in case he has to meet me there straight from work, which is highly possible.
