  • Do I just need folic acid or something else as well?

As some of you may have seen from my other thread, I got a surprise BFP, so I haven't been taking any folic acid because we weren't TTC, so I'm totally terrified about that anyway...

I have no idea about these things, do I need special vitamins or anything, or just the FA?

Congrats on your BFP, don't worry about not taking Folic acid already; i did'nt start taking it untill i found out that i was pregnant, you can just start it from now. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy.

if you diet is otherwise reasonable - plenty of fruit and veg then folic acid is all you actually need - it is all I took.  However there are a number of pregnancy vitiman/mineral products on the market which contain the recommended amout of folic acid as well as other vitamins and are probably a good idea if you diet is otherwise not so great, particularly if you find yourself loosing your appetitate and eating crap as a result of morning sickness.  The only important thing to note is that you should only take either folic acid on its own or vitamin supplements specifically aimed at pregnant women - general vitimin supplements are not suitable for pregnant women since they contain too much vitaimin A which is harmful to pregnant women.

Folic acid, yep take that. I was also told to take Vit B for rickets, though I don't think that's a common recommendation on here...

Oh heck, it might be Vit D (Mummy brain gone to  mush). Let me google...

Thanks all for the advice, I'll go out on my lunch break and get some FA, and might look into getting some others vits later.

I asked at my health food shop and they said the quality of pregnacare etc wasn't great. They recommended an iron liquid, floradex, which has a little of vit b6,12 and c too.

Just folic acid.  If you do take other pregnancy supplements, be aware that iron in tablet form can cause constipation (which is often a problem anyway during pregnancy - the last thing you need is a tablet that makes it worse!).  I don't think it affects everyone, but if you do start with other supplements and then get constipation, you might want to stop the supplement for a bit and see if it helps!
