  Contact I'm really surprised people haven't heard this phrase. I grew up in N. Yorkshire where it was used, I went to uni in West London where it was used and I lived in Hertfordshire for a while and I heard it there too. Maybe I get drawn to the wrong circles! I guess the idea of the campaign is that you have a meal before you go out or when you're out to stop you getting hideously drunk and risking injury to yourself and others.   Contact bobbi: Shiny: I saw the 'Eating isn't cheating' Drinkaware posters today.  I can honestly say in 15 years of doing bar work I have never heard someone say 'Eating is cheating'  It is most odd.   how are these posters stopping people drinking then?     Basically it was a picture of food (something in bread - I think it was a baguette but may have been a kebab/burger) and then 'isn't cheating' underneath.  The food had a brand name on it though which I found distracting and I thought it was a food adverts until I saw the tiny drinkaware logo.   Sophia born 17 July 2006 William born 5 June 2008

  Contact I'm actually a little worried about this ad - it is a common myth that eating somehow sobers you up... Yes, food will take you longer to metabolise the alcohol, due to the fact that it'll sit on the food in your stomach, and so take longer to even enter your bloodstream.  The problem comes when it comes to driving - again, the general consensus is that if you eat something it will "sober you up" and make you safer to drive - THIS IS NOT TRUE!  it will in fact mean that you could be over the drink driving limit for LONGER!  a large meal with a bottle of wine, could see you still over the limit the next morning. If not driving, then yes, some food may make you FEEL better - and perhaps the full effects of the alcohol wouldn't take hold whilst you're still out and about. Mrs SC
