  • How am I supposed to collect a urine sample from an 11 month old?

As per title really. N's been off colour for a few days, it's probably teething but I noticed his urine smelled particularly pungent yesterday so took him to the docs and she said to collect a sample. All well and good but how? I've been chasing him round nappy-less this morning and all it's resulted in is a huge poo explosion on the carpet. It's particularly cold today but that doesn't seem to be helping. I've tried blowing on his bits but that just makes him laugh and it seems a bit wrong! Can I tape it on and leave it inside his nappy?*

*not really, obviously, but I can't think of any better ideas

Put cotton wool in his nappy and wring it out later?

    Hi there,

I had to collect a urine sample from my LO when she was about 4 months old. My GP provided me with a pack which contain some sterile pads (bit like panty liners) which don't absorb the urine very quickly, a syringe and a sample pot. The idea is that you put the pad inside the nappy, and regulary check the nappy, about every 15 minutes (a pain I know) and when the pad looks wet, syringe the urine from the pad, this is easier than it sounds, I promise! Then transfer it into the sample pot.

Maybe you could give your surgery a ring and ask if they supply these?

When the hospital wanted a sample from my baby they used a special bag that taped over her bits and it worked a treat.  these don't sound commonplace though.  I'd be tempted to make my own version of this using a sandwich bag and some micropore tape, however I don't imagine it would be too sterile ........

I know its ridiculous isn't it! I had to collect a sample from Lily when she was about 3 months old. They just gave me a little pot. I had to take her nappy off and lay her in her cot and then sit there trying to keep the pot between her legs for bloomin ages till she finally did a wee (I did try the blowing on her bits!). Easier said than done when she was wriggling around. God knows how I would have done it if she had been more mobile!

One of my NCT friends had to do the same though and she got given one of the bags that Sciver mentioned which apparently was MUCH easier!

We had to collect a urine sample from our almost 18 month old last week. Our surgery has bag things especially for children that has a hole it it which goes over their bits and tapes on the surrounding skin. The Dr did also say that the other way to do it was to place a sanitary towel in the nappy and then ring it out into a bottle. We opted to go and get the bag but if that isn't an option then maybe you could try the sanitary towel?

    Good luck!
