  • Any tips on getting them to drink cows' milk?

Alexander won't touch it. At the moment, he's having a BF in the morning and then 150ml milk on his porridge. He'll have 1 or 2 yoghurts a day, and that's it. I'm really worried it's not enough...can anyone let me into any tricks of the trade to get him to drink milk, or alternatively just to get lots more dairy/calcium into his diet?

    Thanks in advance!

Have you tried it warm and cold? Both of my bf babies wouldn't have it warm but will cold.

Cara won't touch cows milk either. She still has a BF in the morning and evening. She will drink the Cow & Gate growing up milk so I give her this during the day. I figure something is better than nothing, so am happy for her to have it.

Would this be an option for Alexander? Maybe if he takes that then you could gradually mix it with cows milk and then increase the cows milk as he gets more used to it?

What temperature are you giving him the milk at? We started Samuel on warm milk and then gradually gave it cooler and cooler and now he manages it out of the fridge.

Luckily Samuel loves dairy (unlike me!) so he eats cheese slices (dairylea etc) but also I give him slices of cheddar etc as part of a mini picnic with scotch eggs, sausage rolls etc. Would he eat custard or a smoothie made with milk?

Willing to try anything...does formula taste more like breastmilk than cows' milk does?

Banana milk, it's all O will touch, but he generally downs about 300ml every night.

I had a mind once, now I have small children.

Formula tastes nothing like bm,neither does cows milk.

Flavour it. I know it is a bit frowned upon, but when we replaced M's morning BF with rice/soya milk, I started giving her 'milkshake' rather than just milk (which she wouldn't touch) - first the ready made soya milkshakes, and then rice milk with a small spoonful of banana nesquik in (the nesquik packet recommends 3-4 heaped teaspoons but that seems unecessary sugar to me). She love(d) her milkshake and happily downs the lot. And actually I realised that the powder was more of a crutch for me than her & have completely stopped adding it in the past couple of weeks - and she still calls her milk a milkshake & still drinks it all.

I know some better hitchers than I do proper sugar-free milkshakes - whizz up with banana/ice etc.

Also I guess make sure there's lots of cream/cheese in his diet. Will he eat macaroni cheese? Rice pudding (I make up a big batch of this in the slow cooker & then freeze in ice cubes)?

    I don't know - I haven't tried either of them!

It has a fairly sweet/sickly smell to it. It comes in both large and small ready made cartons. Maybe get one of the small ones (about 45p) and try him with that rather than spending out on the large 4 pack?

Cara drinks it cold - either as soon as we buy it off the shelf, or out of the fridge.

    Hi,

    I have no advice on how to get A to drink more milk, but I was reading an AK book yesterday and there is a table with milk replacements listed, as follows (most are obvious, the amounts are equivalant to 300mls milk);

Fromage Frais - 175g, approx 3 small pots

    Yoghurts - 80g, approx 1 pot

Vanilla Ice Cream - 130g, approx 2 scoops

    Cheddar or Edam - 20g

    Cottage Cheese - 200g

    Cream Cheese - 175g

White Bread - 3 large slices

    Dried Apricots - 200g

    Dried Figs - 73g

    Hope this helps
