Joy oh Joy - Vacuum cleaners

My hoover broke last night. It hadn't been working properly for a long time, we'd had it for years and put it through the mill. Any kind of spillage, out came the hoover.  From glass, to soot, to general household dust.

So, now I need to buy a new one. There are offers on in Argos atm.  A Dyson DC07 for £149.99, saving £80. Our old one was a Dyson, about 7 years old. However, we now have hardwood floors downstairs and carpet upstairs.  The spec for the DC07 says suitable for carpeted homes.

Another on offer is the Vax Mach 2, slightly smaller but has floor head adjustments which I assume means suitable for hardwood floors. This is £99.

We really only have about £150 to spend.  Any recommendations for a hoover, for hardwood and carpeted floors within this price range?

    TIA Thanks

Ours broke last weekend, we're really short of money so thought we would have to get a cheapy one just to put us on. But we ended up getting this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4062446/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CKitchen+and+laundry%7C10198386/c_2/2%7Ccat_10198386%7CVacuum+cleaners%7C10198408/c_3/3%7Ccat_10198408%7CCylinder+bagless+vacuum+cleaners%7C10198411.htm

Henry.  We bought a Charles (the one with a water section too), based on the fact all cleaners and builders seem to own Henrys, and they are very very good, and only arund £100

Thanks all.  I really want a Miele as I've heard nothing but great reviews about them, but thought they were ridiculously expensive.

NN good point about the Henry, my cleaner for work has one and it's great.  I prefer upright though...

I've just looked at the Which best buy table and the top 4 were all Miele and there were another 3 or 4 Miele also in the top 20.

The pale yellow Miele came out better than the black one I listed, and it's slightly cheaper too.

Seriously, I've never owned such a fantastic vacuum (I know, it's sad to be this enthusiastic about a vacuum!).

Oh that's good to know Alison, thank you.  I'm very tempted, the only thing putting me off is the fact it's not an upright.  I can't help but think I'd get a back ache using it, and how easy is it to store....

They're really easy to store - the bit with the sucking end on slides in to the side of the vacuum body and is held in place and you can stand it on it's end. Then it's just the bendy tube bit to hang up. It takes less room than our old upright one took.

I have a lower back problem and don't get any aches and pains using it. The suction is so good that I'm actually vacuuming for a much shorter period of time.

I bought an Electrolux vitesse 1800w (from Currys).

    - It's quite small, so it's light.
    - It's an upright.
    - It's not fancy, but it picks up well. We have 3 cats, and it's really good.
    - Easy to empty.
    - Adjustable brush bar for carpets and flat surfaces
    - Was only abot £60/£70 (bargain!)

Two fat cats, in silly party hats.

Oh that's good to know Alison.  I think we'll go for it.  As I said I didn't realise they were in our price range.  It can do carpet and hardwood floors, is easy to store....yep, sold!

    Thanks Thanks

There is this one of offer for £149.00. 5 year warranty and bags are included (I hadn't thought about the cost of bags)

It doesn't say anything about the hardfloor / carpet, though.  Are all Miele standard for being ok on both types of floor?

This is the text of the Which review:

Excellent cleaning results across the board make this bagged cylinder from Miele a Best Buy.

It's a great choice for any floor surface. This Best Buy comes from Miele’s compact range, making it ideal if storage space is short. The pretty pale yellow S4211 is excellent value, offering first class cleaning ability on all surfaces.

It blitzed through the pet hair test, cleaning up in around one minute; slower than uprights but fantastic work for a cylinder. Allergen retention is very good, too.

The vac is very easy to use. We had no problems changing bags and filters and the vac is easy to move around.

Pros: superb cleaning results in all our tests, including pet hair

    Cons: none

Scored 4 stars for carpet and 5 stars for laminate and floorboard.

We have bought extra bags and they don't fill up that quickly. My mum, on the other hand, seals the bag (it has a sliding shutter), takes the bag to the bin, empties in to the bin and just re-uses the bag over & over again.
