as a place to visit for the weekend

where we can get a nice but cheaply priced hotel

where we can go for a nice but not too expensive meal on the Sunday night for our anniversary

where there are lots of attractions for us to see, preferably some that are free.

Trying to do romantic anniversary weekend on a budget!

  • Re: X Posted with OT - Recommend me a UK town, city or area

We spent our first anniversary in Lower Slaughter in the Cotswalds, very romantic

    Northumberland!

We stayed here Cook and Barker Inn Northumberland, four star traditional inn ... for a special occasion and they did a room and meal combined deal and the restaurant was fabulous. It's in the country but you aren't far from the coast, holy island, the farne islands or hadrians wall. You can either walk to see pretty things or pay to visit attractions/go on a boat, but they aren't extortionate.

Can you tell I'm enthusiastic? Quite a way from you though Zippy...it'd be a trek.

I can spell and use grammar. I can also write adequate prose. I kust find these things hard on an Apple device.

    Baby girl P 21.11.2011 7lb 6oz at 38+3. Absolutely perfect.

I think it might be. Thanks anyway. At the moment we are swaying towards the Cotswolds, but all the hotels I like are way over budget! why do we have to be so skint?

Some of my favourite places in the UK and at varying budgets:

New Forest - somewhere like Lyndhurst is good if you are on a budget and it's nice and central.  There are lots of pretty B&Bs - we stayed here - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g503849-d614146-Reviews-Temple_Lodge-Lyndhurst_New_Forest_Hampshire_England.html and plenty of things to do which don't involve a lot of money like bike rides and canoeing and Beaulieu museum is great if you are into cars and old houses.

Windsor, Berkshire - bit expensive but tons to do and see like the Castle and the Great Park as well as plenty of lovely restaurants.  We got a good deal on the McDonald Windsor when we stayed http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g186419-d1803763-Reviews-Macdonald_Windsor_Hotel-Windsor_Windsor_and_Maidenhead_Berkshire_England.html - totally beautiful newly refurbished hotel right in the centre of Windsor opposite the Castle.  There is also a gorgeous little tea room right opposite called The Crooked House.

Stratford upon Avon - if you stay slightly out of town there are some nice hotels you can stay in on a budget.  We got a good online deal when we stayed here http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g186399-d192003-Reviews-Menzies_Welcombe_Hotel_Golf_Course-Stratford_upon_Avon_Warwickshire_England.html There is plenty to do and see including lots of Shakespeare stuff if you are interested.  The River is gorgeous too and there are loads of restaurants to choose from.

Bath - loads of B&Bs at good prices.  We stayed here http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g186370-d667644-Reviews-One_Three_Nine_Bath-Bath_Somerset_England.html and they do smoked salmon and bucks fizz daily at breakfast included in the price (well they did when we went a few years back so check before booking!)  I recall a lovely restaurant we went to when we stayed.  I can't remember the name but could look it up for you.  It had won some awards anyway and had amazing vegetarian food and was very reasonably priced.

Thanks for the fab reply. I will be checking all the hotels out in the morning.

I think you must be in my head because all of the places mentioned were on my list of places I would like to visit!! Think we are swaying towards either Stratford upon Avon or New Forest right now.

The slaughters are lovely (but can be pricey)

If you want to head for the cotswolds and stay in  check with the budget

    try

    Nailsworth

    Stroud

    Tetbury

    Cirencester

    Malmsbury

All have nice B and Bs (bit less than a hotel)

All are easy drives from Bath, Cheltenham and other cotswold attractions and as a bonus they all have at least one decent place to eat so you wouldn't have to drive for your anniversary dinner if you wanted a glass of wine.

If you want some  B and B info approx these areas I think I can still lay my hands on the info mation we sent our wedding guests

You're welcome Zippy.  They are beautiful places and all totally worth a visit.  I was going to mention Cambridge but then noticed you live near there so probably want to be a bit further afield! Laugh

Stratford upon Avon or New Forest are two of my absolute faves.  They're very different too which is great.  Hope you find something lovely. x

We just got back from Stratford for our 4th wedding anniversary.

    I love it there!!

This time round, we stayed in the Premier Inn, which is right in the town centre and has rooms for £29.00 per night.

I can totally recommend Lambs (on Sheep Street - http://www.lambsrestaurant.co.uk/ ) but it is a little pricey or The Old Thatch Tavern (Greenhill Street - http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/25/25632/Old_Thatch_Tavern/Stratford_Upon_Avon ) food there is also amazing.

For something romantic, you could have a stroll along the riverside, or even take a canal cruise.  I think that cost around £6 each.  We went to the butterfly farm and managed to get a BOGOF voucher from here http://www.vouchercloud.com/stratford-upon-avon-butterfly-farm-mobile-vouchers so that was only £6 for both of us!!

We had a lovely time and if you have the money and are interested in that kind of thing, you could do the shakepeare houses (£20 each for all of them).

Enjoy your trip, whereever you decide to go xx

    Thanks everyone.

Was out yesterday so haven't had chance to have a look yet, but promise to look at lunchtime today. Think I'm sold on Stratford upon Avon now :)
