  • Harry Potter

I've noticed that a few hitchers have recently mentioned their love for HP, so I thought I'd start a thread.

I'm so excited about the new film, especially after seeing the new trailer.

My favourite characters are Severus Snape, Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius Black and Ron Weasley. I'm not a huge fan of Dumbledor or Harry.

The Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite book.

I don't like the way Jk Rowling allows her books to be changed in the films (like The Burrow being set alight) and for things to be missed out. There is a scene in the latest trailer that didn't appear in the books that has left me thinking 'WTF?'.

I always had faith in Snape and he is one of my favourite characters ever. Love

The saddest moment in the films so far is when Dobby died and HP dug his grave for him without using magic, That will change after the last film...

''I killed Sirius Black'' is my favourite quote from the films and Helena does it so well.

Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter are the best actor and actress in the films IMO. Gary Oldman is second.

Rupert Grint is the best actor of the kids - I love his comic timing.

I absolutely adore HP!  I was quite late to reading the books and started in 2001 when I was on maternity leave.  I was shopping in Asda with my mum when I saw The Philosphers Stone and thought I'd give it a go.  That was me hooked and I read the first four books in 8 days.  I used to sit in bed with my torch reading it so as not to wake my H up!

My favourite part in the books was the second to last page of The Deathly Hallows when Harry tells his son that he was named after Severus as he was the bravest man he has ever met.  Made me cry the first time I read it and still makes me cry every time.

I cried whilst reading The Half Blood Prince when Dumbledore died but didnt cry when I watched the film.  I cried bucket loads when Dobby died in the film and book.

My favourite book is The Prisoner of Azkaban - completely brilliant.

I love Neville Longbottom, especially in the last book.

I could talk about this all day.

I far prefer the books to the films, I do wish they wouldn't fiddle with stuff and change the dialogue - like in the Chamber of Secrets, they changed what Harry and Tom Riddle said to each other and it kind of made HP sound more like scooby doo than the series' hero...

My favourite characters are Mrs Weasley and Minerva McGonagal, I do think Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith have been excellently cast - when I re-read the books, I 'see' certain actors in the roles from the film.  Some are (to me) hopelessly miscast - I'm really not keen on Michael Gambon as Dumbledore - I know the original actor died, but really, could they find no one else?

I haven't seen the Deathly Hallows Part 1 yet - have it on DVD, but OH doesn't like it, so I'm trying to find time to be alone in the house so I can watch it.

My favourite book changes between The Order of the Phoenix and the Chamber of Secrets.  I'm not ashamed to say I did cry when I read the bit about Dobby dying.

  • Re: Harry Potter

I bought the Philospher's Stone for my son when I saw it in a charity shop and decided to read it to 'see what all the fuss was about' - I was hooked.

That bit made me cry too, I was already sad about what happened to Snape so it just about finished me off. It's so sad that no one knew what Snape had done while he was alive. JKR said in an interview that HP insisted that a portrait if Snape was hung up in the Headmaster's office - I would love to see that in the film.

I don't find the demontors scary, but some of the Death Eaters really freak me out - especially when they've got their masks etc on.

I found the conclusion to the Malfoy story in the book really heartwarming - when they were huddled together in the hall so please to have found their son alive. I felt sorry for them in the end, especially Lucius - he had seen the error of his ways but it was too late to go back and he knew that him and his family could have been killed at any point.

I find the relationship with Bellatrix and 'TOWCBN' odd but believable - she is an absolute nutter!

Harry never pulled 'TOWCBN' off a tower in the books did he?

I think these two are the weakest books.  I just didnt feel as fulfilled when I read them.

Fair enough, the plot does get a little thin in places in both books.  My tastes change fairly often - I used to absolutely love The Prisoner of Azkban, but seeing the film killed my passion for it, don't know why - I'm not keen on that particular film at all and when I read the book now, I just see bits of the film in my head.  I wasn't very keen on The Goblet of Fire at first - way too much quidditch for my liking, bored me senseless.  I now love that book (but skip the QWC bits).

I read all the books as they came out, being the fastest reader in my house meant I got to read them first (mwahaha) and we used to go and see the films for my sister's birthday present so I've only seen them up until the point I left home (which was fairly on in the films).

I remember the excitement and build up to the books coming out being excruciating!

Hopefully when they're all out they'll end up cheap enough to buy the set in a couple of years.

I absoloutley love Harry Potter so much so that my first born son will be called Harry!!!

I don't really have a favourite book, i like and dislike parts in them all.

I too bawled my eyes out when reading the dobby death bit and did exactly the same in the film.

As much as i can't wait for part 2, i don't want it to come as it's the end, although i really want to see the end bit when their grown ups!

Big, big HP fan here. Azkaban is my favourite film; Order of the Phoenix is my favourite book.

I think they have to change somethings for the films because it's so hard to cater for people who have read the book and people who haven't but like the films (like my OH). I think they did a great job with number 6 given half the story basically revolved around a cupboard...

Love Alan Rickman as Snape. Found Dobby insanely annoying in the films, but still cried when he died!

One thing I like about the books is the way JK isn't afraid to kill people off.

I try to be a HP fan for Hs sake. I've read the first 3 the books but found them so boring that I couldn't tell you what happened now... I watch the films and do try to be enthusiastic for his sake too and don't get me wrong, they aren't bad, they just are not the types of films I would usually choose to watch. I do want to watch the last one now though having sat through the most recent one on the plane (good to pass time!) but again, I just didn't get the HP fever you lot seem to have Big Smile

  • Re: Harry Potter

I have massive love for the Harry Potter series. I started reading them when I was 16 and was hooked. I got through the first 4 in a week and was itching for the 5th one to come out! H bought me the 7th for my birthday the year it was released and about a day after I'd finished reading it, I left it on my window sill with the window open and some little sh1t nicked it! I have another copy now but I cried and cried over that.

Film-wise, the kids' acting in the first 2 really makes me cringe, and I desperately wish there wasn't the dramatic change in the style of the films from the 3rd one onwards. I like continuity! I think I'm in a rare camp of liking Michael Gambon as Dumbledore.... He brings a rawness and edge to the character that Richard Harris didn't.

One of my favourite castings was Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart. He was absolutely smashing, and I loved to hate him! All the adults have been brilliantly cast.

I giggled my socks off at the bit in Goblet of Fire where Harry and Ron are trying to get dates for the Ball and they're exasperated by how complex girls are! Brilliant :D

We have Breaking Dawn in November!

  • Re: Harry Potter

This thread is so me, I am a complete Harry Potter geek and I don't care who knows it! I got hooked when a friend of mine lent me the first 4 books in 2000, I got through all four in a week and since then I've rushed out to buy the others the day they were released!

The final book I will never forget the release of, 21st July 2007. I remember this because on 20th July I was travelling to Newquay with my friend, and we were booked into a Travelodge near Bristol overnight to break up the drive. This was the night when the huge floods hit Tewkesbury and we spent the night in her 2 seater car on the M5, 2 junctions from our hotel room. Next to us was a Tesco delivery truck, we had our theory that it was full of HP books and we amused ourselves with schemes to rob it!! By the time we actually made it to Newquay we had to go to 4 different shops before we could get our hands on a copy each.

I'm a faster reader than her and almost had her stopping reading when she saw me bawling when Dobby died. I adore Dobby, and when they were dressing him to bury him I just fell to bits! I was a bit more restrained at the movie - I don't like crying in public so I held it in as much as I could!

My favourite lines are when Dobby says to Bellatrix that he doesn't mean to kill, just to maim or seriously injure in Deathly Hallows pt 1, and Hermione's "Just because you have the emotional range of a teaspoon" to Ron in Order of the Phoenix.

I can't wait for the final film, I'm sad it's the end but I'm so excited for it!
