I'm sitting here crying my eyes out. 1 in 45 seems so high, especally based on my age (30)

I've just had a lady ring me and go through it.

I'm devastated, how can I cope with this.

Yes, she went through different options and then said to ring her back when i've spoken to H etc... and we can come in to chat further.

The lady was lovely. I asked her if it could have been the fact i've been so poorly this pastmonth with flu and she said thee's no way it could affect it. I feel like i've done something wrong though Cry

Hug please try not to worry, I know it's probably no consolation at the moment, but there are others who've had worse odds but still been ok (hopefully someone who has can come on and reassure you)

Have they suggested what to do next?  Is there anyone you can talk to about your options??

Oh lovely, you sound so upset. Have the hospital outlined the next steps or given you details of someone to talk to? Have you spoken to R about it, sounds like you could do with him around to talk things through with. Do remember though that 1 in 45 means you have a 44 in 45 chance of there being nothing wrong at all.

Is there anyone you can talk to this afternoon? I can be free if it would help.

is that just from the bloods?  or is it combined with nuchal? what was the nuchal measurement?

i think the thing with the testing is that it doesnt matter if you have a 1 in 50000 result, you could still be that 1 iyswim.  my colleagues wife had a result of 1 in 4000 and had a LO with downs. thats the thing the tests are just screening tools, not actual diagnostic tools.

from what i read when i was researching things with william, nuchal is more reliable than bloods, so if you had a raised nuchal, they wont do the bloods iyswim.  blood results can apparetnly vary enormously at different times so it can throw up a lot of false positive results.

have they offered further counselling to discuss your options ie amnio/cvs/detailed nuchal?

    sending lots of positive vibes

Sorry, crossed posts there - there's absolutely nothing you've done wrong, so please don't think that.  I think arranging to go in and talk to them is a good idea.  Have you got anyone with you at the moment, or can someone come round to be with you? x

It was the combined test CP.

That makes me feel a little better about the nuchal being more reliable as that was 2.6mm. She said my bloods where a lot higher in one thing which has tipped it. She did explain but I was struggling to take it all in.

They said we can go in again to chat and she's given me her direct line.

She explained the options, it just seems a lot to take in. I'm going to go and pick my husband up from work now as I need him here.

Sorry to hear this.  It must be really hard for you.  I refused these tests as did not want the worry and would love the baby whatever the outcome.  Maybe try googling down syndrome support forum where maybe someone been told the same as you today and how they dealt with things.

pops is anyone at home with you? can your H come home? you sound very upset and it may be worth just having someone there with you.

iirc one of bond girls twins were a 1 in 2 chance of downs, and he was born with no issues at all.

    Hug

Pops - I'm so sad for you. Is there any more tests (although they could be invasive?) they can do? Or if you went for a Private scan could that be more detailed? I don't know if these suggestions help. I'm terrible with advice.
Glad your H is coming home. Pop on again later if you can xxx lots of love xxx

So sorry that you are going through this Hug

I had a 1:40 risk when I was pregnant with my daughter last year. My result was just from the blood test though (which I later found out was a pretty inaccurate test in itself ... something like 60% accurate).

I was given the option of an amniocentesis which we decided to have, but the placenta was at the front of the baby and would have posed a higher risk of the needle perforating it. We went back twice to see if the baby had changed position, but she hadn't. We therefore went for a private 20 week scan instead (a couple of weeks before NHS one was due) and they were able to look at the heart chambers, nasal bone and shins, which tend to be typical markers of Downs Syndrome. That scan did give us some reassurance that everything was OK, and she was born in February 2010 perfectly healthy.

I have an idea of what you are feeling right now. It's bloody horrid, and I hope you and your H can decide on what to do next. Big hugs to you HugKiss
