"you gotta let them cry it out, it'll be worth it in the end. As long as they're fed and dry you know they're crying for no reason" Eek

oh these pesky babies who cry for their mothers, how inconvenient.

    Did you reply?

I hate this kind of status, because I can never just let it go!

  • Re: Facebook gem

My 'friend' says something along the lines of "oh no E only wants to sleep in my bed, screams when I put him in the cot. Need to break that habit now"

cue much "stay strong, he'll get used to it" and some actually helpful suggestions about something smelling of her

I put sonething like "D is in with us when he's ill or wants more cuddles. It's nice to be cuddled to sleep. He goes back to his own bed soon enough. They grow so quick"

the "friend" says she feels awful, just got him in his cot but had to leave him to cry it out (13 weeks)

the gem then followed so now I'll just be being argumentative if I put something else. I feel my first Facebook cull coming on

Don't cull yet!  If you're going to cull, you might as well state your case first Devil

I am in a similar situation - one of my friends has posted a photo of her 13 week old son after his first taste of rusk with milk! I am having to sit on my hands!

  • Re: Facebook gem

I really don't get the obsession to start shoving food down babies throats. Perhaps he's under the illusion that he'll sleep longer [rolls eyes]

Oh its just so sad isnt it ! I really really cant think of anything worse to do to your baby x

  • Re: Facebook gem

I don't really see anything wrong with your friends status Havanababy...i regularly did this with Molly and Daniel...if i had eliminated all poss causes of crying I would leave her to cry.  Not for ages but enough for her to know I wasn't coming everytime she cried.  Don't get me wrong it was hard and gut wrenching at times but she slept through from 5 weeks.  Daniel was a diff matter but every baby is diff as we know.  It seems a shame you would consider culling a friend because they don't have the same view as you?

I wasn't quite as bad as feeding rusk at 13 weeks tho...not sure I would agree with that one

  • Re: Facebook gem

I do not think leaving a 13 week old to cry it out is acceptable. Perhaps if they've been persistently crying and you've reached the end of your tether, leave them somewhere safe for ten mins to calm down buy suggesting that because they are fed and dry they're crying for no reason is absolute tripe.

I wasn't so disturbed by my friend's initial comment tbh. Thinking she needed to break the habit etc is a common thing to think but then she's just left her 13 week old crying alone in his cot so she can have the bed to herself.

when D was beside himself I would hold him, cuddle him, reassure him. It didn't always work bur he wasn't alone.

it's different as they get older

That's so sad. General western culture really has got warped expectations of babies & children, & misunderstands of the needs of babies.

Here's a nice warm fuzzy article: Why african babies don't cry (and it's not 'cos they're left until their brains are harmed, as the research shows). Dr Sears Fussy baby book/webpage is good

Also teaching your baby that if he cries no one will come is heartbreaking and not my idea of success

sweet-cheeks - 13 weeks is far too young for them to 'learn' from being left!  They can't possibly learn at that age! Tbh, when I read what you wrote I had to read back to check you weren't being sarcastic, because I couldn't believe you were being serious.

If your daughter slept through from 5 weeks I can almost guarantee she would have done this anyway, she couldn't have learned anything from being left at that age.

And why shouldn't babies be cuddled if they cry?
