Well you cant blooming win can you!

The "experts" on there (Dr Hilary and some head of nursing and midwifery) have just basically said, yeah its fine to wean at 4months and they should definatley be weaning by 6 months because if you dont you will of missed the window of opportunity!!

No wonder people dont know what to do for the best!

What is this 'window of opportunity'?!! So they are saying if you don't wean by 6 months they aren't ever going to eat anything?!

    Yep it seems so.....

Well thats how it came across to me anyway! No wonder people dont really know what to do for the best hearing things like this!

I was talking to my Mum about this yesterday. The information keeps changing and eventually goes full circle!

Well I'm screwed with Matthew then.  He gags and vomits whenever anything remotely solid is put in his mouth!

I thought that the recent reporting was about allergies?

The 'window of opportunity' idea seems a bit odd and I would imagine that if it exists, it varies from baby to baby anyway.

C showed no interest in food until he was nearly 8 months old (although we did try with solid food from 6-7 months).

to be fair I think this is just a moving area of research and it isn't clear but, mother's might prefer it if all the research into a particular subject unequivically said the same thing but alas that isn't always the case, and sometimes you have to make the best judgement you can with the information available.

For what it is worth, Harriet was weaned at 6 month but refused point blank to eat anything until about 9 months.  It may have been we missed a window of opportunity, she certainly is a lot more fussy at three than many of her friends who were weaned at four months and have always eaten everything, but then she would eat anything at 6 months and you can't make a child eat food if they rufuse it so I always found advice like that profoundly unhelpful!

I asked one of the HVs at work about this and she said that, as yet, there has been no official Dept of Health release on the subject. In fact the first she had heard of it was when a Mum contacted her today.

She said that all along she has been recommending Baby Led Weaning as some babies are hungrier before 6 months. As long as they have milk only for first 17 weeks they will be fine.
