I think it's a wee bit passé to be honest, but each to their own!

Having said that, we are putting all our ushers in tails......mainy to embarrass them as much a possible! Laugh

My uncle did this at a cousin's wedding once.  The bridal party weren't in morning dress, he looked like a total tool.

Mr JK's uncle wore his to our wedding five years ago, and though he was alone in this, I thought he looked fab, and no-one thought he looked out of place.

If he's the groom, then his day his way blah blah. If not, and the groom is not wearing a top hat and tails, he'll look a twat. If the groom/BM/ushers/fotb are, then fine. I don't think it's 80s at all, but that doesn't mean it's universally appropriate.

I think it looks lovely- if it's a smart wedding, then why not. Naturally, if it's a 'barefoot on the beach' type affair then it's a little de trop. Laugh when you say 80s, do you mean 1880s? ROTFL

  • Re: Top Hat 'n' Tails for weddings - A touch 80's??

I think it only suits if the men are tall as well.

  • Re: Top Hat 'n' Tails for weddings - A touch 80's??

At most of the weddings we go to most men wear morning suits- the weddings tend to be formal church + marquee.

Do you mean, should your H wear one as a guest or should you have it as the dress code at your wedding?  If the former, I'd ask if you're not sure- I wouldn't personally want to be the only one in a morning suit (or worse, be in one if only the groom and BM were), unless it's obviously a relaxed affair in which case lounge suit is better.  If the latter, I wouldn't impose a dress code that your friends will have to shell out to follow.  If you just mean that he wants to wear one himself (as groom), why not, unless it's otherwise a very informal do?  Do get him to wear a tie rather than some awful cravat though- it's not A Christmas Carol.

At our wedding H and all his lot and our dads wore tails but no top hat (H moaned enough about the suit!)  None of our guests wore tails though - I think it would have been overly formal for our wedding even though it was fairly formal.

Of course I told him so - curse my post baby light weightedness. Embarrassed

Only the bridal party wore morning suits & top hats (well, they carried them). I refused to let them have the canes, as I could see them sword fighting with them. As for the guests, no didn't see anyone else in formal morning suits. My parents have been invited to one wedding, where everyone has to wear top hat & tails.
