  • Comfortable BF position with newborn

Which position/s did you find worked best for you? I cant seem to get comfy and my arms and wrists are suffering.

    Can anyone share any tips?

    Thanks

Have you tried feeding lying down? I can sleep quite well in that position (although not really anymore as she is tooooooo wriggly and rolly)

Try putting S on a cushion on your lap, I had to use a pillow to support Isla in the early days as my arms ached

I fed a few times laying down, but i prefered the rugby ball hold, so she was under my arm; head in my hand and feet out towards my back.

Rugby ball here too - and get yourself a Widgey cushion or similar nursing cushion, mine was a lifesaver for the first few weeks.

I had to use a wrist support at first because I got terrible wrist ache, but definately invest in a v cushion/feeding pillow....makes life a lot easier!

I fed them in the cradle hold with lots and lots of pillows and cushions. Nobody warns you about the backpain, do they? It gets easier once they get a bit bigger. Make sure you've got really good support behind your back and take S to your breast, not your breast to S. I used to have a big pillow behind my back and several pillows under my arms. You want the pillows in such a way that they support your arms and help you take your baby's weight.

The widgey cushion is a good one as it stays really firm, and can be used afterwards to support baby when they start sitting up.

How are you holding him for your wrist to hurt? Is his head in your hand and then arm crossed underneath? As he gets bigger you should be able to just use one arm to support him as his head control will be better.

I try feeding him across my body and also in bowling ball hold. It's how I'm bending my hand to support his head that does the damage, but I never realise until after I've finished feeding!

Can you see if his head and body can be supported just by your arm? Might help a bit.

Definitely the widgey pillow - if you're anyway near a large asda, ours often have them in stock.

In the early days, I found cross cradle best for feeding from the L, and rugby for the R. I think because I'm righthanded and my right arm is stronger, that just worked well. Don't be scared to be surrounded by pillows, and to spend the extra minute getting properly comfy before you start a feed.

I used cross cradle and occasionally rugby ball. With cross cradle, I started crossing my knees and my arm supporting G rested on the upper leg IYSWIM and took her weight - I mainly used this when she was a little older and I know the guidelines are to have your feet flat on the floor. I used a widgey cushion at my back - I didn't get on with pillows underneath G, but most people do find them helpful and supportive.
