  • Scan at 35 weeks

20 week scan showed a low lying placenta so i am due to have another scan at 35 weeks to check position again. The letter came through with the apoointment today and it says i need to drink a pint of water 1 hour before the scan. I can understand the need to for the 12 and 20 weeks scans but didn't think i'd need to at 35 weeks! It's a good job the ladies are situated right next door to the ultrasound room. Has anyone else having a late scan been told they need to drink a pint of water before the scan?

With my last pregnancy, I had growth scans at 30, 34, 36 & 38 weeks. I was not told to drink water before any of them!

I also have a growth scan at 34 weeks this time & haven't been asked to drink water.

i thought you only had to drink water before your 12 week scan as the bladder can push up the uterus to allow a better view. What's the point at such a late date?

I am with Splosh, I thought it was only at earlier scans

I had a scan last week at 37 weeks and didnt get asked to drink any water, I thought there was no need seeing the baby is so big at this point, I had the same thought as splosh, that you only have to have a ful bladder for the 12 wk scan.

I had a scan ay 32 weeks to check where the placenta was and was told to drink water but when I got there I couldn't wait any longer to go to the toilet so ended up with an empty bladder for it and it was fine.

I think it's that they like you to have something in your bladder, I had growth scans every 4 weeks and the later it got, the less I worried. Either call them to check it's right that you need a full bladder or ask at the desk when you get there.

I didn't end up having anything in my bladder at either my 12 or 20 week scans. The first time I was told to go for a wee as the wait was so long and last week at my 20 week scan I had had too much liquid and was busting so the sonographer let me go to the ladies before the scan.

I never did understand why you'd need a full bladder!

    WEES

I had a growth scan at 37 weeks. Wasn't told to drink any extra water and they didn't have any problems getting a clear scan.

I had a low lying placenta scan at 34 weeks and did not drink anything more than normal that morning.

Just a note we assumed that we would not be able to get a photo so didn't take any money and the they offered us one (bad mummy icon).

Hope that all is well when you have your scan

Thanks for all the replies. I won't worry too much about drinking a full pint of water given what has been said on here, i was absolutely dreading having that much in my bladder at that stage. I struggle now at 30+5!

We've been wondering about the scan pictures, we'll take some money just in case we can get one.

Hope it goes okay. I'm still drinking before my scans and will contnue for a while - think of it this way, if you go with a full bladder the worst that can happen is you need to empty it!

Thanks Madonna, think my biggest worry with filling my bladder has always been that they'll ask me to half empty it or something daft! I'm really just waiting to get to the scan date now as it will determine whether i can attempt VBAC or not.
